I know, this is backwards...I am considering the transmission from level 10. My question is, what is involved in converting from a manual to an auto? thanks |

What are your times like, then, 06blue? How inconsistent are you?
For me, part of the fun of the manual is learning how to be consistent with it.

There's also the advantage that you can select whatever gear you want in a manual the moment you want to.

Have you thought about getting a new shifter such as a hust or MGW? That may help.

If you want to convert to a 5R55S from a 05+ Mustang then you will need the trans from Ford or a shop $2100 and a flywheel $150 and a Torque Converter $800-1800 and a new auto wiring harness $???? <--never got price on one and shifter and console pieces
If you want to convert to a 4R70W then you need the trans $2000-7500 and driveshaft $600 and Torque Converter $800-1800 and shifter $275 and flywheel $150 and the wiring harness for lock up and trans brake and overdrive comes with it and you can keep the wiring harness for the 5 speed because the trans is a manual shift automatic

Zip - what I dial in at depends on the conditions. My typical dial in is usually about a 13.12 and I will run a 13.14 but sometimes a 13.10. Last night I dialed in at 13.30 because we had a pretty stiff head wind. I ran a 13.37 the first round (let off because I was so far ahead at the end) second round I ran a 13.38, I might have won this race had I not let off again. The car felt like it was flying so I thought I was going to break out. The car will run faster than that but I keep the engine warm between rounds so the car is at the same temp every round in acase we get into a round robin situation with no time to cool down. I have run a best of 12.91 with a cool engine.
I do agree that the fun of a manual is learning to be consistent with it but when you have these 16 year old kids come in with their autmatic Slowbalts running 17 seconds and running within .01 of their dialin every time because all they have to do is stomp the pedal when the light turns green, it gets a little frustrating, especially when they brag about beating a Mustang, there is no talent in that. Heck, the street legal track champion from last year ran a mini-van. I do already have an MGW shifter. Does anybody feel that this shifter is a little notchy? I was missing second for the first few races until I learned you really have to yank on it. 05 KB, thanks for the info. I didn't realize it would be that expensive. I was considering doing an engine swap in the future. Maybe an old school setup like a 347 with a C6. Maybe this will give me a better reason to do it. |

Thats why I like heads-up racing so much better. Racing dial-in is fun, but I wouldnt worry about getting beat by a slow automatic. Its happens. FFW is the same way. You'll see guys who travel with them, running blowers and other mods getting beat by some local guy in a bone stock auto. Guess it depends on what you really want. Bragging rights on being consistent, or bragging rights on being fast...

I think the mgw is perfect and i cant imagine how you could have missed second, maybe you installed it wrong.

i'd rather be fastest out of 3 runs rather than be slow and consistant out of those 3 runs. if you are doing bracket racing though it'll be hard winning against slower cars that haven't a chance in the world at spinning their tires.

Not to mention that's easier to be consistent in a slower car.
