My dumpy little Haynes manual doesn't go into removing and installing the ring and pinion gear. I would love to see what is involved with this. I tried searching the forum with no luck. Are there any write-ups on changing gears here?

Well I don't know the tricks of the trade, but I'm pretty mechanically inclined, have a good assortment of tools, and not afraid to dive in to something I've never done before. I've read so many posts here that say "let the pros do it", I'm just wondering what makes it difficult enough for people to say this?

Part of the success in gear installs is having more than just the average set of tools. Digital mic for spec'ing in the gear lash is almost a necessity with these cars as they simply tend to whine.. Shimming the carrier and setting the pinion depth/preload are the two key items..

A good installer can do this by feel, but you'll find that a majority of the installers that have been doing it by feel for years, are not doing the 05 and up stangs by feel for feer of a come back now a days. They are struggling with whine on coast.

If your feeling all giddy about trying it, here's a few write ups, I suggest read, read, then read again..

The first is off a 4x4 forum I subscribe to but it is so good of an explanation in regards to setting up rear ends, it's a must read.

Pirate4x4.com - The largest off roading website in the world.

The one below refers to older models, but a rear end is essentially a rear end, some (like our S197's) are just flat out finicky..

no i do not have a shop and a lift, just jack stands and a floor jack. works everytime. takes more time but its so much more fun doing it yourself.

emay is right, you need a dail indicator to set back lash, you need a inch pounds torque wrench to get turning torque. so it can be alot of work if you dont have this stuff, i do have it just from being in the parts shop and going, "hmm i am going to need that one day" and everytime i always use it sometime or another.

it is not a fun or easy job doing in my driveway lol.

and hey if you guys were closer i would do them for ya.

Thanks Emay, for posting this. Looks like great info. Will read in more detail when I am at home. I took a look at the tools list and I do have everything they mentioned but the highest torque wrench I have goes to 150 ftlbs, not the 250 needed. It does look like a big job, but very interesting and I look forward to reading up on it more later.
