4.10 gears

So I was browsing around looking at this 4.10 gear and XCal tuner package and it said that the XCal tuner would come with only one tune but you could opt to buy 2 more. What exactly does that mean? And what is an SCT Tune? If you can define the acronym that would rock

SCT is the brand of tuner. the company itself supplies tunes for you if you give them what you have on your car. IE: you have a if you're going to get the 4:10's you would also tell them you have a K&N CAI. the tuner itself i believe can hold up to 3 different tunes in it. so if you wanted a tune for 91 octane you would just let them know. you can also keep your factory tune in the sct xcal

SCT's XCAL2 Handheld Tuner can also do other things than just reflash the computer, you can also adjust some of the following:

-spark and fuel adjustments
-idle RPM adjustments
-speedometer correction for different gears and/or tires
-speed limiter adjustment / removal
-rev limiter adjustment
-improve throttle response
-automatic transmission shift control, change shift points
-disable traction control
-read and clear OBD-II check engine light codes
-lower cooling fan on / off temperatures
-data logging via the OBD-II port on the XCAL2 or laptop
-reflash to stock program

The SCT XCAL2 is great...

You can tell them what mods you already have and they can give you a tune to better use them...Also with the other tunes you can get them to give you tunes using different grades of gas and also a less agreesive tune for gas savings...

SCT 2

Get the SCT 2 from Brenspeed, it comes with 3 tunes. From what I read, it's the best. Santa is bringing me one!

I have an SCT tune also and I have to say it's great.

But, getting back to the other half of this thread, the gears...

I know this has been covered elswhere on the forum but I am going to be replacing the gears in my 07 in a few months and I have heard the 4:10's cause a lot of noise at highway speeds do to the increased RPM's etc. Also, the MPG drops.

Since this car is my normal driving car (just needs some extra oomph to teach the lowered sentras a lesson:-) I was considering a less meaty set of gears like the 3:90 or even those new 3:73's.

What do y'all think?

4.10's are very quiet, as are any gears, that are installed correctly. I have 4.10's in my '07 GT installed by my Ford Dealer. Just as quiet as the 3.55's were.

As far as fuel mileage go, I hate to ask this but, did you buy this car for the mileage? I didn't think so. I'm averaging about 19-22 depending on my ability to keep my right foot off of the floor mat.

Heh, yes, well, it's true that MPG was not a major concern when buying this car....I was just curious about the affects.

What I was wondering about wasn't gear noise but what RPM the car would cruise at with those gears. What I mean is: If I am sailing down the road at 80 MPH and the car is making 4000 RPM, it would be pretty loud in the cabin. Now, I love the sound but several hours like that would be a bit tough on the ears.

Here is the scoop on gears. 4.10 are no noisier that 3.55, 3.73 or 3.90's if they are installed correctly. simple as that. I have 4.10 and I have layed down in the back of my car with the seats down half way in the trunk and could not hear the gears at 0-80 nothing. there are some issues with Motive 3.90 and 4.10 gears that are not matched up that will make noise, (FRPP does not make 3.90's.) before install look at the part numbers and make sure they do not start with M- (motive) you want the ones that start with P- (FRPP) Now, not all motive gears make noise , again it's all on how they are installed, I only mention the Motive mfg # because they tend to have the noise issue.

If you go to FRPP website they suggest 3.73 for Automatics and 4.10 for Manual. Just remember that FRPP is very conservative on their performance packs.
I think the 4.10 is a perfect gear for the S197 Cars, I run at 80 on the highway and the RPMs are just under 3000 RPM.

Calculators:
This is a Microsoft Excel Worksheet the calculates Rear End Gear changes and there effects to RPM and Speed. Also there is a calculator that will assist you in selecting the correct Tire size for your car including what Wheel and Tires combo will fit.

TRY IT IT IS A GREAT TOOL. I PUT A LOT OF WORK INTO IT

Download the sheet here.
http://home.comcast.net/~swieduwilt0...lculations.xls

you can get an excel viewer that plugs into your browser here:

Dude, gears are a waste of time. You are not getting any gain by going to a different gear set. Sure, one gear set will get you to 60 faster than another, but at what cost ???? GAS ?? Stick with what you have from Ford and look at other modds. Gears are waaaaay overrated

Oh, and I forgot to mention, gears DO not give you more HP ! They simply spread the powerband delivery to other gears. STUPID ! not worth it

NOT TRUE,
I went from 25mpg to 23 mpg on the highway but gained mph in the city with my gears.

Sure 4.10 will give you better 60' time but I also gained over 3/4 sec in the 1/4 mile time. I am running 13.3 in the 1/4 with an automatic, stock tires, intake and tune. and I weight over 230 lbs. I out run Manual S197 with CAI and Tune. My car smokes first, barks second and somtimes third. they are way fun. Plus they step up the Fun Factor in automatics.

A Manual S197 with 4.10, CAI and Tune can scrape the 12's no problem so how is that a waste????

Gears will actually reduce HP on the dyno.

No ...not a waste, but the point is the gears are not giving you more HP ! DO it if you have car that you only drive drag. DO NOT do it on your daily driver. There are a ton of other modds.....supercharger, turbo..etc that will make the gear option a joke. Its all about shifting and the driver

I agree that with a Supercharger or turbo that MAX gear would be 3.73. I would stick with the 3.55 and dump the 3.31's in the auto. But if you do not plan to add boost, the gears will give you the best off the line performace street or strip.

you are talking about 6-8 grand to add boost to these cars thats alot of cash for some people, I wanted to feel some of the HP in the seat of my pants, The 400 bucks i spent on gears and install did that.
If I decide to add a power adder in the future, then sure I will dump my gears and go to 3.55 to 3.73 Max thats the game you play when modding your car.

You mention Shifting and the driver, this is true with the manuals. but some of us do not have the option to drive manual cars, I have a bad left knee from a motorcycle accident several years ago. I want to have some fun and race my car from time to time, and the 3.31 stock gears sucked, the car could not even do a good burn out. Gears are almost a must with the autos beleive me the car wakes up.

Sure Gears do not give you more HP but either does Axel Back Mufflers, you change your mufflers to get a better sound, with some draw backs, Drone or noise ordinance in city zones. but we spen dthe money and do it anyways. Gears are no different, they do not give us more HP but it puts the HP we have to better use, down lower where I like it. the 4.10 gears will allow you to feel the 300 HP you have, just like the mufflers allowing us to hear those same 300 ponies

I really don't think gear mods are a joke. There's nothing like the feeling of having your spine slammed against your seat when you hammer your GT in 2nd gear. You can really FEEL a difference with 4.10's over 3.55's.

Actually

4:10's are a lot of fun! They make passing in 5th a blast too. But I still feel the 3:55's are perfect running a blower or not. On my drag radials with a Brenspeed 93 octane tune, done with the SCT Xcal2 and a C&L CAI, I can run pretty consistant high 12's at around 110. I have a 5 speed manual on my 07 GT.

Im tripping the lights banging the rev limiter in third gear. 4:10's would have me shifting to 4th. I may be wrong, im pretty old but I think one man said he is turning just under 3.000 rpm at 80 mph. I believe im turning like 2.500 at 80 mph. And 140 mph at 4.000. I just like the combination where I can go very fast easily, and all day, and still accelerate like a demon out of hell.
