If it was me traveling alone I wouldn't take the gun but since my fiancee is coming with me I'll take it to make her feel safer

So, how does it work if you are crossing state lines with iron? Or are you?

If you travel safely with iron, there's generally no legal problem crossing state lines. Just has to be in a box out of reach while driving and seperate from ammunition, ie, not loaded. Be smart and safe and also make sure you bring your FOID.

Even if you're going to sell it, it's not illegal to cross state lines. Legally owning a gun isn't a crime, it's a right as a US citizen and protected by our constitution.
