Hood Corrosion on Front Lip.. Please Read

Hello,

Just a word of advice to all you guys still covered under warranty. If you notice the front lip/edge of your hood to be corroding, or the paint bubbling and cracking, take it in immediately before the car is out of warranty.

Ford's corrosion warranty will not cover this repair unless there is a hole present (which there won't be with aluminum) so it will not be covered unless you are under the New Vehicle Warranty.

After the hood is stripped, a different sealer is used to prevent future corrosion.

The images of the black hood are when the corrosion is beginning to form and the blue hood is when it's getting bad.

What's warranty on that? 1 year/12k miles or does it fall under the 3year/36k miles?

Either way I'm out of luck, I'm at 54k miles. Mines doing it and I thought it was just a spot that was shittily prepped before paint. Oh well, I'll be going with a cowl hood in the next year or two.

The New Vehicle warranty is 3 years /36,000 miles or 60,000 km. A lot of times it will occur without rock chips but rock chips are will make it more likely to corrode.

Happening without on mine. Was that way when I bought it. No biggie.

I'll try to remember to take a pic and post up.

Do you have pictures of a damaged paint?

If they just sand the lip and recoat with a good sealant and paint to match, I'd expect $2-300 for a great job. I'll prob end up with either a Cobra R hood or a 2.5" cowl in the near future.

I took pics today but they didn't turn out good due to sun glare. I'll try to get some more this evening.

Also would advise you to check your trunk lid.

Will appear as rough spots beneath the paint. Search Filiform Corrosion

I noticed the corrosion on my hood this spring and I was reluctant to bring it in since I knew the corrosion warranty only covered perforations. I might give it a shot though. Wouldn't hurt. I'm pissed Ford hasn't figured this issue out since it's been around since the '05.

Didn't realize it was an 05+ S197 issue, figured maybe they changed paint technique/application for the 2010+ models? Doubt they'll do anything but I'm going to take mine in anyway and see if any advice/help can be given.

Marc needs to chime in on this.

my 2011 Roush is doing the same thing. Took it to dealer about a month ago and Ford is going to cover it. They just took some pictures and submitted it to ford. As you can tell there is no rust spots... just the paint bubbling. The spot is about the size of a nickel and wraps around to underside of hood. The body shop here in Huntsville, AL quoted me 450-500 because have to repaint the entire hood and re-stripe. Just waiting on stripes from Roush now...

That's what it is Priddy.

I took a few pics. Disregard the tar specs on my hood. Roadwork going on in my daily commute. Washed the damn thing yesterday and it's already looking rough. Unfortunately mine is significantly worse on the underside than yours. Not the only spots but the ones that came out the clearest in pics.

Yes that white spot is where the paint has peeled because it's so bad. The other spots under the lip of the hood are cracking slightly.

Will be taking it in soon. Maybe they'll help. It may end up being a widespread issue and recalled. My mother had a 01 Trans Am and they had issues with the clear coat peeling, they recalled them for that and fixed them on GM's dime. Who knows what Ford will say.

If you are still under 3yr/36k then you should be good for them to fix it. I would request that they redo the whole hood if they didn't already suggest that... rather than just trying to sand the problem area and fix it.

Yea some dealerships take good care of their customers regardless of warranty. Esp when it's something the manufacturer did incorrectly.

Yep, hopefully they will. There shouldn't be any question about it, especially if it's beginning to become widespread.

If anyone's interested in knowing the cause of this, it's because the aluminum hoods were not prepped correctly at the factory. It's due to iron contamination in the aluminum during the manufacturing process. Unfortunately from what I've heard it seems that even getting your hood repainted may not resolve this issue permanently. If Ford does end up repainting my hood for free then that will give me some time to save some money up for an aftermarket hood to resolve the problem permanently.

Damn guys that looks bad lol, I don't have any of that, all I got was some paint chip at the edge facing the windshield, seems some body popped up the hood while wipers were up, it doesn't bother me though..

It took about a year and a half for mine to start appearing. I run a detailing business on the side too so I know a thing or two about keeping my car clean which annoys the hell out of me because this is still happening even with all the care I've given this car.
