5.0 Mustang magazine article

They've got a 19 page story all about the development and specs of the new 5.0. VERY technical, resident gear heads on this board should love it. I would post a link to the article but their website doesn't have one...just lets you know their latest issue has the story. Sorry. Just wanted to post the fyi. Worth the few bucks to pick up the mag. Looks like this motor is pretty potent.

i looked at the car stats, and damn i am impressed and cannot wait to pick up my 2011 stang this july. i am wondering if they are gonna incorporate the track pack seeing how they already upgraded everything besides the gear ratio. 3:31 are shitty compaired to 3:73 or 4:10. you put these gears on that car and your running low 12's if you can hook up. the car sounds really sound with forged rods and crank. pistons all you need is some deep dish forged pistons and then boost the hell out of it with about 14psi and your at a good 600whp . damn this car is going to be so sweet!

Thanks for scanning in the article. I was reading it last night. The first thing that comes to mind that I don't like is the thermostat is located in the water pump assembly. Thermostats should take no more thank 20 minutes or less to swap out and now Ford is putting them in the water pump assembly?! My buddy's LS series Z28 has the same setup and it's such an ass pain to change it out. Not ideal if you ask me.

Another problem I see is they shaved down the sleeves to make a bigger bore. That's fine and dandy, but if you go to rebuild this engine would you have to put new sleeves in it or would there be enough "meat" to bore it out and if it can be bored out are you making the cylinder walls too weak for FI?

For what it is stock I'm fairly impressed with the numbers it's pumping out.

I'm wondering about a few downers myself......

First off, Ti-VCT.... Will this be tuner friendly or just disabled/hacked off like VCT in the 05-10s.

Second, the damn block is only 4 bolt main. Will it hold more power than say my beloved Teksid 6 bolt main block?

Third, skipshift.... booooo. Better be able to disable it without problems.

Fourth..... another composite intake manifold. Last time Ford tried this they cracked and leaked coolant into your block before making it go boom. They were recalled but no damn dealer would perform the fix. My 98 GT was leaking shortly before the guy ran the red and put me into a Cobra.

Fifth.... are we still going to be able to bolt on to this thing? Does it have anywhere to go besides FI?

I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm curious about that myself.

4 bolt mains should be fine for 95% of GT owners.

Agree 100% on skipshift. Apparently it's an easy fix on cars equipped with it. Hope it's the case here.

The intakes on S197's haven't had any real issues that I know of, perform just fine.

I think this is the million dollar question. The fact that the heads seem to flow so well coupled with 11:1 compression gives me hope that there's a lot of power to be gained from non FI mods. On the flipside, this motor should make a lot of power with 6-8 lbs. of boost...it will depend on how the rods can hold up. They hold up better than they get credit for in the 4.6's...provided the tune is good.

the rods are supposed to be forged. if thats the case the engine should hold up. and anything over 5psi with 11:1 is making the engine wear and tear faster than it should, even with a great tune.

howa bout cams? with the new set up how will this engine react and now with four the cam package is going to be a bit pricey

I don't think the skip shift is much to worry about. Most of us can't keep our foot out of the throttle any way. They have skip shift eliminators for the M6 for all the bow ties, so I can only imagine it's going to be a plug and play for the new mustangs as well.

They're still powdered metal...not the same thing as forged steel. They're basically the same as the rods in the 4.6, just strengthend a little. LS3s' have powdered metal rods as well.

I would expect cams to be over $1000.

I think that this engine will do well, given time. The issues stated above are good points, but I look at it this way-

Buy one, like it, keep it stock, or-

Wait until some aftermarket stuff comes out, the prices drop, and you can spend a reasonable amount of money and have plenty of get-up and go.

Look at the 2vs- their heads are the main choking point, and five years after the engine was put out to pasture, Trick Flow came out with the Twisted Wedge heads.

Each engine has its strong and weak points. The weak points will be plucked out of all the stats, for sure, by the LS guys (who are probably kinda scared), and the good ones will pop up on this forum. Either way, no matter the technology, the aftermarket is going to end up with some great things for this engine in the end. There WILL be ways to get around 11:1 compression, there WILL be ways to make power from four cams, despite the independently controlled timing, and there WILL be ways to get this car into some sweet 1/4 mile times without destroying the wallet.

Just give it time.
