3.31 swap for 3.73 or 4.10?
First off, I'm new to the forum and I already know this topic has probably been discussed to death but, I have a 2012 manual GT with 3.31 gears and I've decided a gear swap would be the quickest way to get noticeable results and make sure camaroes aren't a problem. I had decided on 3.73s but the guy at the shop I'm getting the work done at suggested 4.10s.
I had thought the 4.10s would be too aggressive for d/d but he seemed to think it would make no noticeable difference in drivability. I am mostly concerned with what this could potentially do to 1/4 et's and 0-60 since it will undoubtedly require an extra shift for each. Will the gained acceleration outweigh the time needed for the extra shift? Does anyone have any actual track times or any data for the kind of changes in mpg and theoretical top speed? |

I went from 3.31s to 3.73s. Perfect gear for a DD. No 1/4 mile times though

I know I'd probably be happy with 3.73s right now I guess my concern is I plan to go to bigger wheels down the road and wonder if that will make me wish I got 4.10s...
I'm also very curious about how the shifting times up with 4.10's I guess I'm afraid I'll run out of gear to quick. |

I have big wheels and tires. My rears are 11" wide with a 28" tall tire. Still feels peppy to me.

Yup. Plus I have a Boss intake and raised my redline to 7500.

The 3.73's are amazing but my cousin races his mustangs an highly suggests the 4.10's. I'm not sure of his times but his cars are insane.

Just throwing this out there, I've heard of two cars that went faster running a taller gear. From 3.73s to 3.55s the guy picked up a tenth or more and 3 mph in the quarter and another 10 second car that went from a 3.90 to a 3.55 and went faster as well.

Also transmission gearing takes affect too...
For regular driving and weekend racer status 3.73's are the best bet with these cars.

The other car was just an intake/tune/exhaust manual 5.0 with a good set of tires.

Was that on average? If he only did a run or two before the swap and one after then that may not mean as much.

I'm researching the same thing and here are some M6 3.73 geared theoreticals based on gear calculators that are available
27" tire = 114 mph at 7,000 rpms, 4th gear (OE tire diameter) 28" tire = 118 mph at 7,000 rpms, 4th gear Bumping the redline just 100-200 rpm raises the 28" tire-4th gear max to 120-121 mph

Shaun at AED went from 3.73s to 3.55s. With a 28 inch tire he picked up 2 tenths and 3 mph. He tunes my car. I run 3.31s with a 26 inch tire and Shaun recommended keeping it that way. I will be going to the track hopefully this Wednesday for some times with his tune. I just loaded it up yesterday.
3.55s are perfect for the track, although for street action (which is rarely a full 1/4), you may get better results from a deeper gear. Mike |

Thanks everyone this has been very helpful so far. My over all goal with this car is to keep it well rounded, in the long run handling is very important to me and I want to kind of give it a road racing set up more so than drag racing. That being said I still want to be able to smoke camaroes and challengers from street lights so I guess 0-60 is more important than 1/4 mile. I've heard the 3.73 is the best set up for 0-60 and also motor trends M3 vs. Mustang GT comparo used a mustang with 3.73's and they posted nearly identical times.

If you want to rule the street from light to light, do not even stop at Boardwalk...just pass go and load up some 4.10s or 4.30s....and some tires that hook.
