Tranny question

And no not the tranny's your thinking of you gutter minded fools.

I have no knowledge of a transmission other than it shifts diffrent gears. I have an auto 04 mach1 and looking through transmission parts. I see clutch kits and flywheels and was wondering if i can but these parts or if im stuck with the stock transmission?

For an automatic, you can't do clutch kits.

If you want to change how your tranny acts, you have a couple options. One is a shift kit; this will affect how firm the transmission shifts, and how high of rpm it will hold gears. Another is a stall converter. Right now if you lightly hold the brake, and slowly press the gas, the engine will come up to a certain rpm before the wheels start moving (I'm not sure what stock stall is, I'm guessing 2k?). With a higher rpm stall converter, the car won't start moving until the rpm rating of the converter; so a 3500 rpm stall converter will allow you to bring the engine up to 3500 rpm when you launch.

That's not a perfect explanation, but I'm sure someone else will come and fill in what I've missed

I have an auto 01GT and you can shift kit, j-mod, stalls, tuners, and get a tranny cooler asap. auto are prone to over heat and maybe shutter.

Oh, +1 on the tuner, ESPECIALLY with an automatic!

That would actually be the first thing I'd suggest, as you can undo whatever you do with a push of a button.

Are you not happy with the auto? You can always convert to manual.

Considering the OP said this:

I'm not sure that suggesting a tranny swap may be a good idea.

It may not be a good idea but I was pretty much in the same shoes as the OP when I got my Mach. I'd driven a stick a handful of times and the Mach was fairly easy to learn with because it didn't take much gas to get it to move. On the other hand, I'd kill smaller engine cars because I wasn't giving it enough gas.

To the OP, you can get a flywheel if you want but it isn't something you will want to do with your level of knowledge. There are other things you could do that would probably net you better gains or performance. Seeing as you already have basic exhaust and intake mods I'd suggest going suspension or working on your rear. Throwing in a new set of gears really helps out the autos.
