Question

1999 Vs 2001 Cobra

I had a quick question about 99/01 cobras. In the summer i am going to sell my v6 and buy either a cobra or a TA Ws6. Well anyway what’s difference in the 99 and the 01 cobra. I was looking on this website that showed stock 0-60's and 1/4 mile times and there was a very noticeable difference between the 99 and 01 cobra. I don’t know too much about cobras but i thought they were pretty similar.

1999 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT 5.4 13.9
2001 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT 4.8 13.5
2000 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (WS6) 4.9 13.4

So are these times correct or is one of them incorrect or both? This is making me lean more toward the trans Am. Someone help talk me out of getting a trans am if the cobra can stick with it.

If you're going to the dragstrip, the T/A will be a better car for you than an IRS Cobra.

Probably but its not gonna be a weekly activity. I want a cobra but i could get a trans am thats just as quick or even quicker then a cobra for less and the insurance is quite a bit less than the cobra.

Stock to stock, that T/A is already quicker, and the LS1 is going to be MUCH cheaper to mod.

Also, the F-body already has a torque-arm rear, which is going to have phenomenally better traction off the line than the Mustang IRS.

The T/A is also already running a better transmission. The Cobra will either be running a T45 or a 3650 (I forget when the switch was), whereas the F-body will be running a T56 (assuming you got one with a stick).

Seriously, I love my Cobras, but if you're going after straight-line performance, the Trans Am is just flat a better car.

Oh, and to actually answer your question, lol.

'01 Cobras are identical to '99s, except for:
-stronger IRS
-WAP block instead of Teskid
-Tremec 3650 instead of T45 (I believe).

That, and they actually had their advertised power, whereas the '99 had a recall to bring it up to spec.

Thanks for the info guys. I love mustangs but the TA seems like more bang for the buck in most categories... Mods, price of the car, insurance, and the performance. Also its not as hard to find a fairly priced TA.

Both 99 and 01's have the same motor (4.6). Just the 01's didn't have the issue with the "fix" that the 99's needed.

99's had a recall on them so unless you are 100% sure it got the fix and found a great deal on one, I wouldn't even think about them over an 01.

Also, just a minor detail, but the 99 had MUSTANG on the back bumper and the 01 had COBRA on the back....I'm just saying.

You know which car I would pick out of the three you mentioned.

Let's just say you have $15,000 to spend on a car. You will find a much better car with less miles in the T/A. Even though the Terminator Cobras are the ones that everyone wants, the N/A NewEdge Cobras are still somewhat rare and people are asking quite a bit out of them.

If you look around on ls1tech you can find some nice WS6 cars with less than 40,000 miles for under $13K. And a lot of those already have the basic bolt-ons you would want.

+1. I think 2001 was the lowest production years out of the new edge cobra's. You see so many damn terminators and so little new edges. I wuv mine

I would mention that *most* 99-01s will not be Teksids.

99 was the year where they made many appearances but were not exactly 100% Teksids across the board. I'd venture to say more WAP than Teksids in 99 but I have no real data backing that up.

2001 got a select few from recalls but I havent heard of a stock 2001 having a Teksid.

99 had much worse IRS, I'd go with 2001 simply for the thicker IRS.

the teksid block was made from 93-99, they have a square pattern in the intake valley, the 99's did have teksids but the only difference between the 99's and the pre 99's is a change in the main bearing cap detail. also 01's were also known to have teksid blocks as well.
check this out for the 01's
my early '01 has a teksid block? (see pics) - SVTPerformance

some 01 owners did get their engine replaced for reasons, but a majority still have their stock blocks and they have Teksid's.
