help: 1996 mustang cobra

Hey guys, i went to go look at a mustang cobra yesterday, and it looks fine and everything, but there is a problem.

The muffler rattles when started, because there is a hair line crack in the body. I had one person tell me its nothing big, but then one guy who said that the cars frame is twisted and probably that is why the exhaust is hitting the frame.

any help?

A car fax would be a good place to start if you want to see if it has been in a major wreck. Just like any time you buy a used car, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a mechanic check it out. In this case, take it by a body shop and they can usually tell you real quick if the car has been in a major accident. Than run it by a muffler shop and have them look at it.

If the owner of the car doesn't want you doing all this investigating than walk away.

some very sound advice in this post! my car had been in a wreck before i bought it, but the dealership let me take it to a shop, and have the alignment checked, along with giving me a carfax. if they won't do that, than i'd pass!!

usually a cracked floorpan means someone really abused that car or it was wrecked

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. Well, i emailed him and I confused myself. There isnt a crack in the frame, but in the muffler itself.

But he may be lying. I was curious, if their is a crack in the frame, could that make the muffler rattle? It makes sense that it rattles if the muffler is cracked cause of the pressure going through it..

Also, he is sending me a picture to prove it is in the muffler.

any help is appreciated, thanks

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat actually. My car has developed this nasty rattle. Usually it is between 1500-1800 RPM, but occasionaly at idle. It's a real annoying metallic rattle.

I took it to my muffler guy Tuesday and after checking everything out he told me it's some of the chambers inside the muffler coming loose and rattling real bad. Looks like I'm getting a new exhaust soon.

alright, so the rattling will be from the exhaust, not from a crack in the frame?

The exhaust is pretty old, so i hope thats the problem.

thanks guys
