Short throw or not?
Is there a way I can tell if my car has a short throw or stock? This is my first manual car and I have no idea but Im getting ready to order some stuff and if I dont have one I wanna get one. If I just pull off the boot is there a way I can tell? Thanks.
Oh and if I dont have a short throw what would you recommend?

You should be able to tell by he height of the shifter. A stock shifter is VERY tall. However, if you pull the boot off, most aftermarket shifters will be marked with their logo.

Well, you guys are assuming it that someone didn't put the stock handle on the aftermarket shifter.
I ran mine that way for about a year, and I'd go back if I could get a stock-length arm without the rubber bushing. Without taking it apart, I'd see how "hard" the shifter centers. If it's got strong centering springs, most likely you already have an aftermarket shifter. Any decent aftermarket shifter will have positive shift stops, as well. You can put the car in first gear (engine not running) then try to push clutch the shifter "past" 1st (further towards the dash). It should feel solid if it's an aftermarket unit, and not let you travel past the point of engagement. If it's mushy and lets you go past the gear, you likely have a stock shifter. Barring that, you can pull the boot and the underboot (may be easier if you remove the shift knob), and just take a look at it. All the aftermarket shifters I've ever seen are use a pretty thick base, looks like billet. The stocker looks like stamped steel. Being that you have a T45, you NEED an aftermarket shifter or you run the risk of overpulling a gear and munching the tranny. The board consensus seems to be for MGW, but I've never shifted one, so I can't say. I have a tri-ax, and knowing what I do know, I wouldn't. It is MUCH better than stock, but it has it's own issues (and I have my own issues with Steeda).

I just don't even know how to repsond!
I did as well. Just the shifter was too long. I have a B&M in mine now and while I like it, it is stiff as hell!

Mine had a pro50 on it and I thought it was junk. I got an MGW because everybody said good stuff about them, so I figured I'd try it. I like the MGW better than the pro50 and Steeda Tri-ax. I will say I never any problems with my Steeda in my old Gt. |

Unfortunately, those don't mean much. You could very easily have a shorter shift lever on a stock shifter, or the stock shift lever on an aftermarket base.
