Head Unit Replacement

I know this has been asked before, but the answers I've seen weren't 100%, so I'll ask again.

Currently, I'm running the OEM head unit (Mach 460) in my car. The CD changer fried in the first one, so I went and got an aftermarket unit, which was a Panasonic CD player. It was ok... had to use a wiring harness, but there was no bass. Even with the harness to power the sub, it did nothing. Piece of shite. So I found an OEM replacement for the 04 and shoved that in there and wallah, I have bass again.

Well, it's been a couple years, and this head unit is starting to give me the classic beginning signs of failure... it always starts with songs skipping in the first few seconds. So I'm looking at my options for another head unit replacement.

While I'm satisfied with the sound quality of the current setup, I'd like to know if there are any aftermarket units out there that can be slapped in that won't require a bunch of rewiring, etc... is there anything that will power the stock speakers/subs properly with perhaps, nothing more than a wiring harness or possibly a straight plug-in?

Furthermore, if this is possible, do any of you have any good suggestions for said aftermarket head units that will play MP3s/WMP files, as well as use an external jack so I can plug my iphone into it?

I personally won't buy any other head units except Pioneer. You can't really beat the quality and design of them.

As for the wiring; yeah you just get the proper 'adapter' harness to allow the new head unit to work w/ the factory subs/speakers. It's like a $10 harness or something.

I agree with the two above me. I love my pioneer. Not to much to wiring either.

I would really get wraithers opinion. He helped me a lot with my speaker problems. He is the all knowing!!! lol

i got an alpine 9886 and got the wiring harness. i'm still battling it not having any bass. i've adjusted some of the stuff on the head unit's basic eq, and it's helped, but it still isn't as good sounding as it is stock. the highs sound amazing, but no bass=grrr. i need to put in a good sub and amp combo and i'd prolly be happy.

Get rid of the entire mach 460 set up, go ahead and do it right and replace everything. That way you never have to worry about it again, and you have the ability to change whatever you want from down the road.

I got a Pioneer double din and I love it, and replaced all of my components with the top ones Pioneer makes (can't remember which ones) with a Kenwood 10" and a 500watt amp, sounds pretty good for all less than a grand.

+1, this is the best way to go at it if you are to put a new head unit in. not really hard at all either.

Damnit so my 6 disc changer in my 01 Cobra skips on the later tracks, like 17+ occasionally, is this the symptom. Did you ever try a CD lens cleaning disc when it started doing it?

Now you've got me worried lol, I love the Mach system in my Cobra.

unfortunately, with the 01-up 6 disc decks (not only in mustangs but in other models as well) they are known to die out with problems ranging from skippings songs, reading no discs when there are some in, wont eject or insert disk, amongst other things. i used to replace, on average, about 50 a week. they are known to fail.
