I mean, maybe just your ring end gaps lined up one time and let some fuel slip thru, maybe the problem is now fixed as the rings are no longer lined up and you will never see the problem again

theres your optimisim

im more then well aware of what it can be bro... but you never know it could just be something simple, he wont know until he runs everything down. I mean if you hear ticking noises coming from the engine your not gonna automatically assume that its something major until you figure out where its coming from and then start going from there to figure it out, right? What you think is valve ticks could end up turning out to be an exhaust leak, your injectors, etc....

I've unfortunately gotten little work done today due to surfing forum after forum looking for hints and clues...

i found a little gem after some hard searching that can provide some basic help.

Technical Documents - www.fordmods.com

I didnt know the computer had so many bad ass tests that you can trigger and activate. Looks like a quick cylinder balance test will show if a single ring is having issues, or a coil isnt firing properly. Cant wait to get home, grab my paperclip, buzzer and see what she does.

EDIT: I know that link says its for the Aussie Falcon, but my cobra also has the EEC-V computer and finding the similar pin to jump should provide the same tests....

a compression test might be able to give you a heads up to, but not nesicarily

and I know you might know what could be, thats why I said make a list of what it could be.

and if I here ticking coming from my engine, its either gonna make me think exhaust leak of valve tick. I wont just think of every little possible thing it could be.

I found what appears to be the test port, but I'm unsure exactly if I've found the correct return wire which will be jumped to the diagnostic port.

The picture I was using shows them as looking like this

http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/forddlc.gif

Now I found the exact same large connector, and I found another connector close by that has a single wire where everything else has 2 or more. I *think* this is the test connector but I'm not sure.

The wire color before the connector is white with a purple stripe. Any ideas?

i dont think that that second one is a test connector. I thought that only worked on 95-below. I am familiar with that method as that is what i used to do when i had my fox. If that test connection is supposed to be like the one on fox's then you are lookind for a black wire with a gray rectangular female spade connecter.

I've found guides for the same thing on EEC-V computers which is what I have in the Cobra.

I'm clueless as to why such a useful feature would disappear. I think its possible but I wish I could use that to help me find my issue.

Well I decided it was time for new Ignition Coils so tonight I grabbed two and installed them in about 20 minutes.

Car seems to run a bit smoother, sounds audibly different, and has quite a bit more grunt in the lower RPMs.

Still not 100% sure my miss is gone but in my 40 minute drive it didnt miss once. Now I think the next thing is to check my plugs and replace them since whichever cylinder was missing probably got fouled.

Dude at Murreys said he has a $450 scanner that can perform the balance test among other things and when he gets off work I can come by and use it for 5 bux. So I'll probably do that next before throwing any more $$$ at the problem.

I'm guessing the injectors will be cleaned next as its a freebie.

Typically if the rings were worn A) you would have excessive crankcase blow by through the PCV, if pressures get too high, I've seen them blow out dipsticks, B) you'd probably have an oil comsumption issue.
I'd agree on checking the injectors for leaking from the pintle. Not uncommon.
