Engine Swap! Any suggestions!?!?!
hey everyone i drive a 2001 cobra, its a 4.6l 4 valve dohc modular engine, it has around 82xxx miles on it so im looking for a new engine with more power, not too much but more. AND should i stick with the modular engine type, or go with a push rod engine (stroker), if i do would i have to do any mods with the transmission.

1) why do you want to swap out your motor? is it trashed or something?
2) if your not looking for more power "Not TOO much but MORE" then start getting some work done to your motor that you already have. How much are you trying to get to? 3) Stay with your MOD and just beef it up. If you were to convert from a Mod to Pushrod you have alot of work ahead. A "Stroker" is not a pushrod it just means longer stroke then stock (crankshaft among other things... im not gonna explain all that is involved so read up on this) How to Stroke Any Engine - Car Craft Magazine

the only possible swap that id ever consider doing would be a 5.4 4v swap.
but with only 80 thousand miles your motor should still be pretty healthy. you can get about however much power you want out of a 4.6. there serves almost no reason to do a motor swap unless your doing one just to do it. so basically you tried wasting everyones time by asking them to "blueprint" your motor for you then saying now you want to swap it.

Before yanking out and swapping, I would tear apart this motor, find the source of the knock, and check for any potential damage. You have a great motor, absolutely no need to swap it, unless you have a cracked block. Just fix and build stronger!!!

it sounded like the tick was coming from the engine bay, but wen i start my car and i just let it idle, i smell exhaust fumes so im hoping that its an exhaust leak.

try taking a bottle filled with some soapy water and spray in the places where you think its coming from. if its an exhaust leak it will start to bubble up. or you can take a rag and cover up your tailpipes and if there is a leak you will be able to just about pinpoint where its coming from.

where is the sound coming from, front of engine, top of engine, underneath car, left of engine, right of engine? does the noise change at all when you give it some gas? Is there a certain thing that you have to do in order to hear it?

yeah im ganna try both those thing 2morrow bc its too dark now, but thnx for the tips, and thew noise sarts as soon as my engine turns on, its a steady ticking noise, wen i open the hood its a little more noticable on the drivers side, but wen i sit in my car wen its ideling i smell exhaust fumes. and wen i gradu\ally press on the gas the noises pattern increases until i cannot hear it anymore do to the engines roar smuggling it, so i think it might be an exhaust leak but i will see 2morrow wen i do the procedures you told me about.

yeah when you try them out be sure to come back and let us know what you have. it could be a couple of things but i would go assuming its the motor gone bad until you have run down a couple of checks.

Do you have another car you can use as a daily driver? If so, you could take the engine apart, or let a shop do it, test everything out, and as long as the block is good, and nothing is warped, cracked, etc... have it built up. Get heads and cams, or have the internals beefed up and go F/I. There are many different options. My plan is to replace my engine while there's still nothing wrong with it. I'd like to take it apart and beef it up and then find another new edge with bad engine problems or a blown engine, buy it, and stick the Mach engine in it with upgraded internals. Either way, any kind of job like this is going to require a bit of downtime. So make sure you plan ahead when you've made your mind up on what you want to do. On that subject, figure out what direction it is you want to take the car in. Do you want to stay NA, or go F/I? How much do you want to spend? What are you going to use the car for? Daily driver or drag queen? Answer that question first, and then go from there.
As for your ticking noise, it can be a few different things. Since you're smelling fumes, exhaust leak is the first thing that comes to mind. A ticking noise is often associated with a leak. What kind of mods do you have? If you have headers/midpipe/exhaust, odds are something wasn't tightened, or perhaps a gasket isn't working.
