Anyone ever had a whine from rear gears?
Hello fellow SVT owners,
I have started to hear a loud whine from the rear gears (3:73's) of my 03 Cobra. It has just started to happen in the past few weeks. I thought that my bearing need replacing and I replaced them, but now this. What causes this? Do I need to replace the gears? Or is this like a fluid level problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've heard varied opinions on this one... the most common is that gear whine is normal. Especially if they aren't stock.

gear whine is ok unless its loud enough to annoy you. Then its probably time for a rebuild.

How long since they were replaced? Could be installation error.

They might need to just be re-shimmed if they are new. When I had gears in the GT it got worse as they broke in. But it wasn't enough to annoy me, and I knew if I was speeding if I heard it.

+1 Cricket, check the backlash of the gear. Could have to be tightened up a bit.

I had them installed shortly after I bought it in 2003. It wasn't even present until about a month ago. My wife drove it to PA, and when she returned it was there. So would it be worth having it checked? I am thinking of maybe changing them to 4:10's (3:73 right now).

if it still drives fine, and is just making a whine then you'll be ok until you change the gears out, but if your gonna keep with what you have get them checked out.

Sounds like the wife is the culprit.
The divorce mod should alleviate future problems with the car.

If I were to have to go into the rear to replace gears, any thoughts on whether 4:10's would be too much? I have a ported eaton, but want either a twin turbo set-up, 3.4l whipple, or 2.8KB.

With more power, I personally wouldn't go with new gears. That is, I'm running 3.55's, and I'm planning on going TT. I'll stick with 3.55's. Anything more = too much power too soon for my tastes. You can do it, but as far as needing it? ehhhhhh.

reshimming gears that are already whinning is a bad idea, them whinning means theres already a wear pattern where the gears mesh together. You can either
A. Have it reshimmed and hope it helps, quite possibly wasting money B. Buy a set of 3.90s and have them installed

If your looking for bigger power I wouldn't go with steeper gears. You would go through the gears too fast, and not use what you have to it's full potential. You want your power adder to do the job of making your car go faster, you don't want your gears to be it.
