01 Cobra surges until WOT...sometimes.


I have a 01 Cobra, built motor, procharger P1SC, SVT focus pump, KB BAP, blah, blah blah. I bought the vehicle maybe a month or so ago and everything seemed good even the owner ran it hard while I was in it. She runs strong 98% of the time but one day I hit WOT, shifted into into 3rd and stomped my foot back on the gas pedal, she surged like it wasn't getting fuel, I let of the throttle a bit and then it ran normal. Today I was riding with another member from here and I was cruising in 2nd, then tried WOT, it surged for a second and then took off. I was so confused I didn't look at my fuel pressure gauge to see if it was a pressure issue. It doesn't do it all the time but I rarely hit WOT because of the streets in the area. Cobra has a boat load of mods so I'm not sure what I should reference in this thread to help figure it out but feel free to ask. It was tuned by Jon Lund before I bought it and will be getting retuned by Mike Rousch at Mid Atlantic Performance Sept 12th, originally for a timing bump but now I want him to investigate this. Thanks for any info.

The couple of times it's happened the gas has been different but respectable gas stations such as Shell and BP are used. They do use 10% ethanol in the area so it runs a little rich. Might do the fuel filter, miles are super low (24K) so it may have not been done. I do have a W/B put since I never know when its going to happen my reaction time is slow and then I try to look at my fuel gauge but then I remember the W/B and I just miss both in the process, lol, so much shit going on! I know this is almost impossible to troubleshoot but I just need ideas. Will start with filter.

yeah bro if you have someone with you have them watch your wideband so that you can see what is going on. Mine did that for a little bit then i changed out my plugs and fuel filter and got a new tune and nothing happens now. also what are your plugs gapped at and have they been changed? But yeah change out the fuel filter and check your plugs as they can indicate whats going on if you know how to read them

look at your plugs
i had this problem with my car and i replaced 2 plugs and it run fins !

thanks for all the info guys, I'll do the fuel filter but I need to double check the plugs, I'm not sure what's in there now to be honest or what I should use but I know what they should look like physically. I'm about to score a 8-rib belt setup from BGG and a re-tune Sept 12th so I'm hoping that between the filter replacement, plug check, 8-rib install and a re-tune that the issue goes away. We will see.

dont forget to add some di-electric grease to your spark plug boot when you reinstall them.

finally got around to installing the fuel filter and changed the oil as well which did appear to be a little low after pumping the old stuff out. I just took her for a little drive to go get some gas and I THINK the little hesitation is gone. I don't want to jinx it but there's not really a road to open her up on to test it so for now there's no issue. Fingers crossed!

spark plugs installed and didn't work. I think I have a super lead! Talked to my soon to be new tuner and he immediately mentioned this! I think this is the golden ticket!

hope that works! like Fluffy said, check the cheap shit first. its most times something small, like when that space ship crashed awahile back it was like a 15 cent peice that failed lol, yay tax dollars, sorry got off subject alittle

Ethanol causes havoc on fuel injection. You could have gummed up injectors.

ethanol is almost in ever gas station across America these days. Shell and BP are for starters. Injectors only have 4K miles on them anyway. Ethanol just means you have to tune richer to balance it out. My 08 F150 only has a ethanol tune not to mention it's only 10% at most. I'll keep that in mind as a expensive fix.

You obviously haven't seen what ethanol can do to injectors and fuel pumps. Can cause all sorts of driveability issues. Of course that from the fuel companies that use higher amounts of ethanol in their fuel.

not being a dick but cars dont suffer from the same issues as they use to from ethanol because most gas has it they design them to take it i run it in mine and race mine all the time runs like a charm! All my cars do and have, mabe you've just bought alot of bad gas.....

It sounds like the returnless fuel system hesitation issue. There were a bunch of good threads on modfords in the terminator section. It can be tuned out most of the time. Adding the KB disk will help, as well as removing the pprv. If you can datalog, log the FRPS and see if you get a massive FP spike on "let off", and a dip when you get on it. You can test it by going wot, full let off in gear, and then punch it.
