98 4.6 motor apart: CAM keyway
Hi all,
I'm building my 4.6 out of my 98 cobra and I just started the timing. I was putting the secondary sprockets back on (right head) and the keyway block came loose and fell out. I'm not sure if it snapped or if it is supposed to be jammed in there. If it's not supposed to be like this then it looks like I might have to pick up a high lift cam kit ( Blue Oval Chips Inc. - Product » 4V High Lift Camshaft kit ) The pictures are: 1: keyway block 2: block placed back 3: block out Thanks, Chris |

The keyway block is supposed to be 1 piece that you can remove it. But if yours broke into multiple pieces and if you can buy a replacement block then do it. Its just like the keyway on a crank. However, if you have the cash get some cams.

OK so it is supposed to be removable? I didn't want to use it if not. I want to order the high lift kit but my goal is to finish the timing and put her back in before my birthday (October). So I just need to think about it for a little and decide.
The keyway block I'm showing here is like a stopper for the key on the timing gear. The secondary sprockets doesn't have the keys so they can slide past the block. |

the cheapest way (if you can do it ) is to remove the entire key and go to a machine shop and have new ones made. Very easy and cheap. Hell you can buy key stock at a good bolt and screw shop and just cut your own. You can upgrade cam gears to the newer style that has them built into the gear like sweet was asking about (what I would do)
