Gear install = cutting IRS?

A couple guys I know are telling me that to install gears in a cobra IRS you either have to remove the entire rear from the car or cut something out of the IRS. I've looked up instructions for installation of gears in IRS and not one of them states removing the entire assembly or anything being cut.

If you guys could help me shed some light in this that would be great. They're telling me it will cost $700+ just for installation and if I find it somewhere cheaper they're cutting some sort of support.

Thanks
Alan

Oh, the differential housing or whatever you call it is removable on the irs, makes it a lot easier to swap things compared to a solid axle. I have a buddy who had a mid 11s thunderbird, had two sets of gears, 4.10s and 2.73 or whatever came stock. He would swap them out as needed and said it really didn't take that long to swap.

Yeah, but they're stating that to get the pumpkin out you have to cut some sort of support brace. I personally think they're full of shit lol

Sounds like someone's being lazy. I seriously doubt the factory service manual would recommend hacking up a customer's car to remove a serviceable component.

See and that's why I question it.

ive never installed gears before. but i think it would be alot easier to just drop the irs out from under the car and it would give you alot more room to work on the diff. and you will probably have to take the half shafts out..

nothing needs to be cut off. You can either drop the entire assembly out like the picture posted above or you could pull out the halfshafts and remove the diff from the irs subframe while leaving it (the subframe) in the car.

Wow, what a bunch of tards. Who are these tools that told you that?

It does take quite awhile for labor, but to say that you need to cut anything is redonkulous.
