Mine is doing the same thing thinkin maybe the clutch disk itself was bent when i put the motor in or maybe improperly torqued pressure plate.

Ok, so i raised the hood and revved it up some and could hear it in the motor. Sounds more like a knock under the hood, but with the fan and everything going it was hard to tell. It wasn't a loud noise, but it is still there. Sounded like it was coming from the top of the motor, but i honestly couldn't really tell.

I know this post is old but I too have a rattling sound coming from under the hood so I found this thread while searching for answers.
It only happens when the car isn't fully warmed up and around 2200 rpm's with light throttle. Sounds like cams rattling or something. Did you ever figure out the issue? |

How many miles are on your car Mach and what are the exact symptoms?
My timing kit went at the end of 2008, somewhere around 80,000 miles. It was a lovely rattling that would happen at startup, a little bit at idle, and a little on the road at certain RPM ranges. I replaced the clutch because it sounded like it was coming from my transmission. It's just the way the sound travels. It ended up being a broken guide rail in the timing kit up front. When we got the cover off, half the rail was gone. The chain was rubbing on a piece of metal that was showing after the plastic piece snapped off, hence the rattle. When the engine wasn't under much load, the chains were rubbing the shit out of the metal. Under load I believe they tense up a bit which quiets it down. Hope this helps.

Ya mine seems to act the same way. 86k for mileage. Never hear it on startup though and never at idle so its hard to pin point the exact spot but definitely sounds like its coming from the front of the motor during driving. It only happens when there is light throttle at around 2000 rpm but once the car is fully warmed up it seems to go away. Possible heat expansion? Also, if I shift around that rpm range it almost sounds like a light bov.
This and your problem you had along with some research Ive done sounds like it just may something with the timing kit as the machs are known for these kit replacements. Logically it makes sense that it is lack of tension in the chain in light load and that would cause the slight rattle when only light load but goes away when you give it more throttle. If my plastic guide is worn to metal then that could be the reason the sound goes away once warmed up as the metal changes form by heat expansion. Did you fix it yourself? If so how difficult/pricey was it to fix your assembly. (i like to do my own work) sick looking mach btw! |

Yeah, my friend and I did the work. It took us about 21 hours total. I'd never done this kind of work before, and my buddy had never worked on a Ford before so it was a learning experience for both of us. The timing kit ran for about $800ish. I bought a cam locking kit and it ended up being pretty useless. Had I paid a shop to do it I'd have ended up spending another $1,000. Getting into it was a bit of a bitch. Had to take a bunch of shit out just to get the valve covers off. Ended up having to bleed the brakes and have the A/C refilled afterward because of that. Once you have the timing cover off, replacing the kit isn't too bad.

Wow thats a pretty price. I hope thats not the issue that I have too but I've been searching for instructions on how to do the job and learning as much as I can just in case.
Thanks for the tips! Keep you posted. |

Look up "shaker rattle". It may be as simple as when under acceleration the shaker will move and create a metal rattle sound.
Hell open the hood and hold the shaker and "shake" it lol if it wiggles maybe there is your problem. You mentioned it was coming from the top of the motor... |

My shaker shakes...
It's an intermittent rattle, but you can tell its a plastic rattle sound. Surprisingly, I don't have that problem/sound at 107k. The only thing worn in my Drivetrain is the ass end. |

Thanks guys, I'll have to check that out then. I would be much happier if it was just that then timing or internals.
