Front rear main seal removal/install

I have an 03 Marauder that has the motor out of it right now because of a transmission problem that resulted in a rebuild. While the tranny is out I wanted to fix a oil leak I have at the front cover and the oil pan.

My questions are in regards to removing/installing the front and rear main seals along with the oil slinger.

Can you use something besides the OEM pullers and installers for the 2 seals and the oil slinger?

The OEM tools are really expensive and I was wondering if a hook type race seal puller could be used to remove and bearing race seal driver set could be used instead to install.

If I have to buy the OEM pieces I will but do not really want to drop $300-$500 if I can help it.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

yes you can, i picked one up from and autoparts store for like $5 and used that. just make sure that when you do use it but a towel in between the cover and tool (where you will make your contact point and leverage on) so that you dont mar up your timing cover. I had a socket about the same size as the oil seal and then tapped it in, wasnt hard at all.

Thanks for the info. I am assuming this is for the front main seal only. Looking at the rear I think I could use a small punch to pivot it out but I am worried about damaging the slinger piece. I have also read that I don't even need the slinger and it isn't necessary to reinstall. Any truth to this or shoudl I make sure I reinstall it?

Got it, thanks for the help. I just pulled the rear seal plate and both the rear seal and slinger came off with it. The slinger just popped out once the plate was loose.

Anyone know if I have to reuse/replace the slinger or can I just leave it off? I hear it isn't necessary and can actually free up a few hp.
