Potential issues to look out for? 1999 SVT Cobra

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask.

I am looking at purchasing a 1999 SVT Cobra that a gentleman is selling in a nearby city. It has 47k miles and it has a Paxton supercharger, its been lowered a bit, immaculate interior. upgraded suspension, tires, exhaust, etc. My first impression is with that kind of mileage and considering its 11 years old I'd think I'd be in the clear.

Are there any things I should look out for before purchasing the vehicle? I will have a mechanic look at it before I make the purchase just to make sure but ANY help or suggestions you guys make would be awesome.

Here's the ad (its a long url): Cars for Sale: 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT w/supercharged V8 in SEDONA , AZ 86336: Coupe Details - 273442099 - AutoTrader.com

lol I still have yet to know what IMO means... to answer your question on the 99 Cobra's the HP rating was off thats why they didnt make them one year to fix the issues I beleive it was originally rated at 320 and 320 on a dyno with factory specs realistically was showing closer to 260 to 280 and same for the torque ,,, they made the come back in 03-04 with the terminator motor which was rated at 390 and 390 but was pushin 420 to 430 and the same for torque on a dyno Mechanical wise good cars but the hp is actually over rated unstead of under rated just keep that in mind but sounds like hes moded it already so expect hp around what the terminator is already at maybe a little more?

Did you also read that they had recalls for it and fixed most of them? But my question is why would you buy a 2v GT instead of a Cobra?

Because the 99 was overrated, duh. Who takes there Almost 30k cars back to the dealer for TSBs?!?!? That's just silly. I should have got a 2valve instead too, better sell the cobra.

IMO == In my opinion
IMHO == In my humble/honest opinion

That being said, make sure the '99 has had the recall done - from what I understand there should be a blue or green dab of paint on the front of one of the heads if it has.

'99s have the weakest iteration of the IRS. See if the prior owner has reinforced/replaced it, if not, that's definitely where I'd start. '99s also still have the T45, which has no internal shift stops - if it doesn't have an aftermarket shifter, get one before you do any sort of driving involving aggressive shifts.

dexter nailed it.

3 things to check on 99's, recall is number one. Calling a ford dealership will let you know to.

Thanks for the responses guys! I just want to make sure that I wont have any forseable issues in the next few years. I only work a mile away from where I live so at most I'd be putting on 4-5000 miles a year on the car. And I'm not much of a drag racer or speedster. I'd be driving this thing gently most of the time.

This guy has replaced much of the suspension and has put in a new aftermarket clutch with the Paxton supercharger, new fuel pump, and some other stuff (cant remember off the top of my head). He doesn't even want to sell it but is forced to due to health problems. He's going out of his way to sell it to me which is nice to be honest. Quite honestly it seems like a needle in a haystack. He's even throwing in two slightly used Michelin Pilot Sport tires (which are like $250 a piece).

He said he's also had it dynoed at around 420rwhp.

I believe it is either a blue or green dab on the intake depending on which method they used to improve the flow, IIRC.

correct, on the front right corner of the intake hat there will be a green or blue dot indicating that it was either replaced and fixed or was acid dipped. Cant remember which one corresponds to which. there are also some cases where the intake was replaced all together and no mark was present.

Ah i never knew about the recall I knew the didn't make it for a year i think it was 00 or 01? I know in 2000 they hand the 5.4 cobra R but not the 4.6's if im correct? and the reason I didn't buy a cobra was because I couldn't find one within 300 miles of me that i could either afford, or was in good condition.. the gt I bought was a previous one owner car that never saw a speed over 65 till I got it from the retired school teacher everything was in immaculate condition with low miles! couldn't pass it up plus its one of my favorite color combo's on a mustang

If you're gonna do any sort of performance driving, I'd be talking to these guys to make sure the IRS is up to the task: Full Tilt Boogie Racing Homepage
