Thinking about a 97 Cobra.
Hey guys,
Im thinking about selling my ride and buying a 96-98 cobra. Can you give me the insider scoop on these cars? Im looking to drive a fast car without the aftermarket maintance that I deal with now. I just want something quick and simple but Im not getting a Fbody. Are they Irs or sra? Do they have any serious motor issues. Can you tell me everything bad about them. I have tons of research to do but I was wondering how are these cars to live with? I live out of my car.

I understand you are wanting to just get something fast out of the box but your going to spend money on it for whatever reasons and it will be expensive. Once you get into the 4v the money starts flyin. Not trying to ditur you just stating the ovious. But shit join our club!!!

Well the cobra is the car il be taking back and forth to collage. So im going to be stuck with it for about 4-5 years. My car now is quick. Im trying to sell my car for about 7-8k and purchuse a stock cobra with the money.
Iv been told I can get that money for my car because its clean. Really really clean. It does have 110k on it. But you couldnt tell. I just want a nice stock car (minus intake and exhaust) to drive around for a few years. But I didnt want to lose any of my performance and I wanted something loud. how are these cars on gas. I am a spirited driver.

if you leave the stock gear and keep your foot out of it they are o.k.
i get around 240 highway miles on a tank and i dont play around that much i have the stock gears in it so i dont know what the deal is |

I got 16.5 around town in my 98, and 22-24 on the highway depending on how fast I could cruise (mine got best mileage between 75 and 80).
If you pick one up, definitely replace the stock shifter, and you'll probably want to replace the steering wheel - the leather Ford used on those wheels was very susceptible to sun damage (I replaced mine with an FR500 wheel - VERY worth it). Make sure you seafoam it on a regular basis. The b-ports have a dry port, and there's no amount of fuel injector cleaner you can run through there that'll clean up the carbon buildup that occurs. I'd seafoam mine every other oil change, and there was a noticable improvement (as measured by the butt dyno) *every* time. Valve jobs are really, really, expensive. I wouldn't even look at a car that needed one. From what I understand, you can't grind the valves, so you have to replace them.

Not with my old Cobra. 60-65 was right under 2k rpm in 5th, and she absolutely hated being there. A couple hundred extra rpm brought just enough torque in for better mileage.
Best I ever got was 26mpg, and that drive was doing everything "wrong" for good gas mileage. I was going over 299 (windy mountain road from the coast into the central valley), in a flat hurry, spending more time in 4th than 5th doing 65+ the whole way. When I hit the valley, I got on 5, where I don't think I was doing any less than 80 the whole way to Red Bluff, where I tanked up. Previous drives over that exact same route had been done going much easier, and I would get 22-23. That drive really changed my perception of how to get good fuel economy with that motor.

B-port may not be the best car to learn stick on. Mine was definitely one of the harder sticks I've ever driven, just by nature of the weight of the car combined with how little low-end torque the DOHC motor has (relatively speaking - peak torque on a stock 'b-port is at 4800 rpm).
I was also always kinda spooked about that tranny ever since I blew it up (I overshifted it into 2nd, which is why I tell everyone to get an aftermarket shifter with shift stops - it would've saved mine), so maybe that was part of it.

Mine is fun, reliable, gets not so great gas mileage, and is stock minus the mentioned shifter, exhaust, suspension, and wheels. After having it for a little over a year, I'd buy it again. It turns a lot of heads and that's fun too.
