exhaust ?

I know theres a million posts on exhaust questions, but I need to know some info that I haven't been able to find on this site. Now, I have a 2001 svt cobra. I want to get a full exhaust ordered and ready by spring time. I'v been saving money for months and this will be my first mod. I need to know about these bbk headers (BBK Ceramic Long Tube Headers (99-04 Cobra and 03-04 Mach 1) at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!) I am aware that it will be a total pain to install, but i know some gear heads who will lend a hand so I'm not so worried about it. What I am worried about is emission laws. I am located in new york, and I know our emission laws are pretty strict. It says in that link that it may not be legal in some states. If they are not legal in NY, are there any LT'S that are emission safe? Help would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know where I could find a Magnapack for a 2001 svt cobra. There doesn't seem to be one on AM. I know they exist because there are videos on youtube. Someone please help lol

generally all you gotta do to keep them legal is have them drilled and get bungs welded in for the O2 sensors and possibly the EGR tube (not sure on that last one tho) then rig up a mid pipe system that retains at least 2 of your cats. other than that just get a tuner taht allows you to shut off the rear O2 sensors to keep the Check engine light off and you should be good to go.

Don't you have to plug into something during an inspection on an OBDII? My last mustang I had was a 1995, which was OBDI. I know they do things differently for inspections here. But lets say they make me plug in and I used my diablo tuner to shut the check engine light off, would they be able to detect something like that?

i have a 99 cobra, i just put ARH longtubes on with a high-flow catted X pipe(2 cats), and i am perfectly California legal.

i almost bought those ceramics BBK's from americanmuscle but i was hearing alot of negative about how they scrape and dont hold together well, everyone told me to either get Kooks, or ARH, and im glad i did

the set i got have all the ports for the o2 sensors and the EGR tube and they arent too bad to get on. they come as a set with the X pipe( which sounds amazing) for 1,400$.

Thanks for the info. I'v been planning on doing headers for awhile now. You wouldn't happen to have a video clip of your setup would you? I'm actually having a tough time finding long tubes for my car. All I can find is shortys or mid-length. I haven't even heard anyone ever using mid length headers. :/

not yet bro im still breaking in the motor, i upgraded to a forged rotating assembly so i had the fortune of putting the headers on the engine while it was on the stand lol.

yeah i hadnt either, kinda wierd, how would you have a midpipe fitted to midlength headers?

i plan on putting a sound clip up in a week or two

You buy a midpipe for midlength headers like the Bassani mid length midpipe

Ok, I'v read the same thing about BBK headers so I may want to look else where. I like the kooks with the catted x pipe. A little pricey but nothing is to expensive when it comes to my cobra lol. Do those come with the ports for the o2 censors, or will I have to drill them? I would also like to know which size to get some say 5/8, 3/4, or 7/8. Thats gotta match up with the pipe size on my catback right? I have borla's on right now but I can check the size if thats the case. The borlas are currently hooked up to my stock midpipe.

im not sure about kooks i decided to go with ARH, but for the price we pay they should.

i would strongly recommend not going larger than 1 3/4 unless your running boost. i went with 1 3/4 and im right around 400 hp N/A, if your cobra is fairly stock( internal wise) 1 5/8 would probally be your best bet man.

oh and the midpipe that comes with the ARH/Kooks should bolt up to your mufflers if they fit your stock midpipe regardless of header size, i think all the midpipes are 3 inch from the collectors to the tail end where they hit the mufflers

I plan on using nitrous or installing a supercharger later on though, should I still go with 5/8? Currently all it has now is a borla catback, and a cold air intake. I'm very new to this stuff and am not to familiar with the variants of the sizes they come in. What are some advantages and disadvantages of a smaller or larger size? Thank you for all the info so far I appreciate it :]

i'd say your fine up to 600 hp with 1 3/4, the 1 7/8ths are for twin turbo/rediculously built & boosted motors. if your headers are too big and your not making enough power, there wont be enough back pressure, resulting in a loss of power and torque plus a more sluggish throttle response.

so if your gonna boost it or nitrous, or just run in the 400 to 600 hp range, your best bet would be the 1 3/4
