premium unleaded only

I was looking at some pictures of my mach 1 (going down to get it Wednesday) and noticed at the speedo it says premium unleaded only. I had no idea these took premium. What's the reason that it needs premium and the 16v GTs don't?

My guess is compression ratio or the stock tune.

my friend said his Cobra manual said 93 octane only..its a 99'..that right?

9.85:1 and mach were 10.0:1
