my rear suspension is HORRIBLE..

i just did a big rebuild on my 99 cobra, and everytime i take the car past probally 75 mph the entire rear end moves up and down side to side all over the place :/ i bought two new tokico shocks but havnt installed them yet, should those solve the problem? or will i need springs too

also theres some drivetrain lash when i get on it then let of the gas, it "bucks" a little bit :/ any ideas? any feedback would be greatly appreciated

shocks will not help with your rear end jumping (side to side) around like that. I'm not up to date on a 99 svt's rearr end but if its a solid rear axel and you havent done anything to it, then it could be simple things like bushings and alignment if your putting more power through the drive train then the weakest link will show itself and you will basicly work backward till your problem is solved. I would take it to a shop and have them double check the alignment first and go from there but with the rear jumping all around sounds like something bigger. But start easy before you throw money at the problem you have to realize that the urethane bushings (knowing ford they are probably just rubber) will wear out over time and rot.

I have a 2001 cobra and it was hoping up and down. Took it down to the local shop and they said it needed new bushings, since then it runs great.

The 99/01 Cobras have IRS

I have been reading up on this, it is more common than you think with 99 cobras. I guess it is primarily the subframe bushings on the IRS that are crap. YOu can almost even hear like a clunk when you let off or get on it. The best rear end bushing kit for the money that I have found is a company called (full tilt boogie) they use a solid Delrin bushings instead of urethane, so no squeak either. Supposed to be a pain in the ass to replace everything in the rear, about 16 hours work, and that is for someone that does it every day.

I did just replace all the shocks in mine and I will note that the ride is way better and feels more solid, not soooo much rear end compression and wheel hop.

Thread

Here is a thread that I had read and it most acurately describes what my issue is. Not sure if it would be related to the problem you are having.

Full Tilt Boogie Racing Homepage

Go here its the rubber vs. poly I would do this and a rear rebuild at the same time so you only have to go in onces and knock it all out!

but its going to be a pita just so you know. lol

bruce's kit isnt that bad. Just make sure you rent his install/removal tools. If you have a hydraulic press handy it will make things much easier but it can also be done with a large d clamp, some boards and 1/4 steel plate..............Also if you have a drill press handy.......go ahead and spring for the grease fitting kit.

My buddy and I did Bruce's full kit in one day.......from dropping the irs, swapping the bushings, and throwing it all back into the car...........You'll be amazed at how much better the irs will feel..........Oh and also make sure to upgrade the front subframe bolts, it will help get rid of that "clunk"
