rear diff

ive got a small leak coming from the diff, just noticed a few drops after pulling my car in the garage and seeing the spots under the car. I jacked it up and looked at the diff cover and damn does it look like a pain in the ass to do anything involving the diff with the IRS and exhaust clearly in the way.

i just got the cobra a month ago, damn do i have bad luck

So A) what do you think could cause this
B) how much you think its gonna run me for a shop to do it because the IRS looks like a bitch

also, i havent even lauched the car or put any strain on the rear end. Im practically babied it, only getting the S/C to kick in from a 40 mph roll in 2nd, never any launches.

Those things are known for leaking. Mine did for a long time. Finally I snapped some parts and ended up putting a quarter sized whole in the cover forcing me to drop everything and replace it.

Could be a few things. Those don't use a gasket, just silicone. Maybe someone recently replaced it and did a shitty job, or overtightened the bolts. That's a common problem. My tuner told me that he gets a few in that leak because they have been overfilled. So it really could be anything, probably no big deal.

It's really not that hard to work on it. Dropping the exhaust is pretty much a must, but that's just a few bolts.

+1 to rk. I'm having to replace my diff cover since I broke it last night on the interstate. do yourself a favor and start beefing it up now. I posted a link in the cobra club thread with a diff cover that is tons cheaper than the FORE one.

What happened to yours Cricket?

I just bought an OEM one from Tousley. I saw the FORE piece on Lethal's site, but with no price at that time. I can only imagine the price. Not for me and a daily driver, that's for sure.

And yeah, the rear diff and that whole area (the IRS) is the weak spot. If you are going to work on it, might as well drop it and replace a lot of things. First thing I would do is replace the trash factory bushings for some aftermarket ones. Full Tilt Boogie is one of the best arounds, and at a fair price. Also, I'd start researching IRS braces.

Good luck.

I was getting ready to get on my exit so I was slowing down, and started to downshift. Downshifted from 5th to 4th for my exit, and I guess I hit a pothole at the same time and it shifted my rear enough. Heard a loud ass boom, my mirror was facing down, rear of the car felt like it jumped off the ground a bit, and then the treacherous drive with those noises, and clunks. Had to rev match every shift to make sure it wasn't clunking.

The Fore diff cover is $699 on Lethal.

LPW is $209 on ebay right now.

get yourself a buddy who is handy with tools........Drop the exhaust and remove the diff on your own. redo the diff cover seal using permatex gray silicone and while you are at it upgrade the front/rear diff bushings with bruce's fulltiltboogieracing.com kit so you dont end up with something like this later down the road.

I'm sure there are some great "how to" threads on svtp that will help you with the job.

Yes but it has been a great advertising tool for Bruce's kit too! Stock rubber bushing FTL!

I did this job last summer - resealed the cover. It is kind of a PITA job as you do have to remove the center pumpkin. While I was at it, I replaced the bushings with poly - that rear OEM bushing is really soft and why the pumpkin moves around a lot. I also installed the Billet Flow IRS brace to prevent a broken cover; it's a nice piece and fits very well. The problem is that the 70 lb. pumpkin has to be tilted and then backed up. I'm not as young as I used to be and, while I did it, could have used an extra set of hands. And, definitely use the gray RTV and let it set overnight before filling it.

Good luck.

I plan on getting Bruce's IRS kit and then having it resealed at the sametime
