How Hard Is Doing Cams?

Just wondering how hard it is to do a set of cams in my 98 cobra? I know Ill need springs and retainers and all that stuff but how hard is actually doing it? Odds are itll be in my garage with no specialty tools available and being very green to actually tearing into this engine. A guide or some know how would be really appreciated.

Just going off of what others have told me, a DOHC motor probably isn't the best choice to pop your cherry on.

take the cam swap on the 350 and amplify that by 4...........take setting the degree on the 350 cam swap and amplify that by 100.

Most definatly not a shadetree mechanic job, you need some special tools and you really need to pull the heads or the motor there is no room in there

Im a tech at a ford delaership, I dont mind working on these motors.. but dont look foward to it.. haha.. but like everyone said.. 4Vs are not for the timid.. ensuring proper cam timing is a must.. if not, you just turned that 4V into a big ol paper weight..

Im a bit sceptacle to take my car to any ford dealer in North dakota because i honestly dont feel that any of them have any knowledge of nor have they worked on a 4v cobra. There arent many of these cars up here and the people that have them dont mod them. So im in a bit of a pickle here.

I had a buddy who had a 04 Cobra a few years back and he borrowed it to a so called buddy, who some how blew the motor up. The local Ford dealership in Minot had to fly a mechanic in from Minneapolis to do the motor replacement under warranty, because there was no SVO trained technition's at the Minot Ford dealership!

As for the DOHC motor itself, I wouldn't advise a Novice to jump into one. I rebuilt the complete engine on my son's 97 Cobra and it was a learning experiance(and I'm an ASE Master Tech!) I'll have to say getting the cams lined up was the hardest part!

It took me a week to do mine and I have done numerous 2v and 3v cam swaps. there is no easy way to do it, you need to set aside a weekend just to degree them.

+1 and a couple more if your learning, don't rush. You can always rent specialty tools from an auto part store.
