Cams???

Hey guys, I really wanna throw a set of cams in. (stock internals)

My questions are:

Will stage 3 fit in my motor?
Will aluminum retainers be good for maybe 100 miles a week
other than a tune, retainers, springs what other supporting mods are needed or recommended (i.e. adjustable cam gears, bigger fuel pumps or 60lb inj, crank pulley, etc..)?

Finally how much of a power/torque gain am I looking at with the stage 3?

current mods are a 2.8 pulley, RAI, accufab 1700 cfm tb/plenum, KB BAP, and coolant tanks. with 3.23s I made 490rwhp after the 4:10 install I made 452rwhp
500+lbs of torque.

thx for all your help.

wait until tonight hits. Thats when most of us have nothing better to do.

I beleive with stage 3's you will need to notch your piston.

depends on cam manufacture. most will but some wont. as for the retainers, they will be fine, but titanium ones are highly recommended.

I didn't have to notch the pistons on mine. I got the XE278AH cams from Comp installed. I used steel retainers. How did you lose that much hp going from 3:23s to 4:10s.

thx, The only prob with the titanium retainers are that the websites are saying its for limited street use and Im not sure why. I drive the car all weekend long and park it during the week under a cover so is that limited?

I just verified today that the power loss with higher gears is very true cause I did not believe the tuner at first. Gears give you a bunch more torque and torque is the first thing you see on a dyno. Once torque runs out hp takes over. When doing bigger gears you wanna ensure that your rpm doesnt hit your redline before the end of the quarter mile which mine is a couple hundred away and thats a "great thing" according to him. I just like seeing big numbers . Not totally sure what all that exactly means but it came from a 9 sec drag radial champ so I believe him.

thx again for yours guys help, Im starting to think that the amount of money for cams and a tune for 30-50rwhp just isnt worth the money. I can spend 2k and port the blower, 60lb injectors, 90mm MAF, 4lb crank pulley and get nearly 100.

Well First off I have the biggest custom Comps you can fit a 03 04 Cobra 4.6 heads with serious bolt ons including Hooker long tubes, Steigy Stage 5, 2.8 upper, 2lb lower, and the custom comps and made 520hp 520lbs of torque with a rich tune, bad plugs, and the most important missing JLT CAI, Acufab TB, and Acufab Plenum.
If I would have had the JLT, Acufab Tb and Plenum with good tune and new plugs I should have made at least 570hp so I was basically making almost 50hp from my cams and thats because of their size.

You wont be able to make 100hp even with a stage 5 steigy and 4lb lower you dont even have long tubes and thats on top of the fact that if you run 4lb lower with 2.8 upper you will be over spinning the rotors on the charger like crazy you will burn them and your charger wont be making or holding boost properly and you will need to get a new set.

Congrats on your great power achievement.

Now, I do have Lont tube headers with an o/r h-pipe and magnapack catback. With the 4:10s I am showing 452rwhp (491 wih 3.23s). I figured that the steggy SNAKE BITE which is there latest/biggest port plus a crank pulley, 90mm MAF and 60lb injectors would put me at about 552 but I dont know everything. I appreciate the schooling on the 4lb lower, would you recommend a 2lb? Or none at all. I really wanna be part of the 500rwhp club with my 4:10s so any help is greatly appreciated.

Trust me you need the 2lb lower and no more than that if you want to get over the 500hp mark and if you get Snake bite port which Iam sure is the same as steigy stage 5 with a new name you should be good to go. And the snake bite seem a waste of money since you have the all the necessary bolt already that are included in the snake bite kits.
