Need help with headers
hey all, just tried to install a set of pacesetters. I ran into a lot of problems though. First problem was with the dipstick tube. That was the least of my problems though. Next the header on the passengers side was hitting the frame rail big time so i gently pried it into place, no big deal other then the fact that its only like 1/4 inch from hittting. Ok, so now i go to put the starter in and it wont fit. The solinoid on the starter is hitting the header. Long story short i tried the make it fit option and put a small dent in the header and it still wont fit. I am now going to send these back and get a different set.
I would really like to hear what brands everyone else is running and how well the fitment is (ease of install, noise, vibration, ect...). Pictures would be great too! btw, my car is a 98 with 03 heads and a vortech supercharger. Last edited by tbird88tbo; June 21st, 2010 at 07:21 PM. Reason: addition |

Oh yeah, the dip stick tube fit with a little wiggling. They make the headers wide so it clears the starter and you can pull the tranny without having to pull the headers, which is a plus.

i have done mac mostly. fitment is good, and cost is very reasonable. the header flange on the mac's isnt a one piece deal so it makes it a little easier. the AR, hooker, kooks, and slp, headers have had good reputations so far as i have seen and heard as well.

How much clearance is typical between the header and the frame?

there usually isnt too much room around the headers, depends on where all you wanting measured. usually the are close to the starter, k-member, and sometimes floor.

I installed kooks lt's on my 01 a couple months ago. Installation was a pain, but doable.

I really like the look of the ARH headers and im sure they are worth the $1200 but thats just too much for me right now. The pacesetters i got seemed ok until i put them on. Now im leaning towards the bbks or possibly macs. I dont like how the flowtech, hedman, and hooker headers have slip-fit primaries, it seems like they would leak. Im also unsure about the macs because they have indiviual flanges. Ive heard of them warping and being hard to reinstall once you take them off. I have a set of equal legnth shorty macs on my t-coupe and i dont recall ever having a problem with them and ive had them on and off several times over the years.
As always any and all input is good and taken into concideration. |

i have a set of Ford Racing shorty's on my 4v. no fitment issues at all...and they are stainless steel but the best part is the lifetime warranty on the jet-hot coating.

yeah, i have a set of those now. In fact i will be putting those back on until i get the engine tuned and the new headers come (edit: need to decide on which ones first). They do fit great, and they are alot easier to install, but i want more flow. My engine will be seeing over 20psi of boost.

The hooker slip flange doesnt leak by design. the air will go in the direction of least resistance, this being toward the flange. air doesnt like to change direction, so it works.
