Sound of Boost!

Hello Everyone,

Everyone knows that the ford modular motors are some of the best sounding V8s around...

The end goal of my project is all about the driving experience, and one very important part of that is the way it sounds. Recently I went for a drive with a fellow who owned a stang which had 13lbs boost through a centrifugal supercharger --and no offence to you centrifugal guys---it sounded like crap. At low speeds, the blow off fired every half second or so, and it squealed like a pig. It actually sounded like the car was broken as i watched it drive away.

No boubt the supercharger does it's job and the car went like stink, but the sound of it really turned me off the car, and the driving experience was bad.

I do like the sound of the eaton/KB supercharger, but before I jump on that, I am wondering if anyone can comment on the way a twin turbo setup sounds? I do like it when the blow off fires during shifts etc. but do they squeal alot otherwise?

Thanks all!

They don't squeal they sound like air rushing under boost. The higher the boost the louder the air rushing sound

Probably not a good idea on buying a supercharger based on how it sounds.

Well like I said, the sound of the car is an important part of the driving experience. All power adders add lots of HP (although there are advantages of some over others), so I'd rather go with the one that I find less annoying.

Yeah I'm thinkin TT now. I like how when doing normal low RPM driving, you hardly know its there.

Maybe the centri that I heard wasn't tuned right, because I honestly don't know how anyone could like it. It didn't whistle, it squealed and hissed.

My S-trim under 3500 (normal cruising speed) never made a peep except for the whistle. the main thing to take into account is the guy's BOV may have been vented to ambient instead of doing a loopback into the S/C intake post MAF. I have a HKS SSQV that is loud as hell after a good hard run, but it has 2 reliefs a small vent for low boost and a big vent for high boost. another thing that comes into play, common with all S/C setups, is belt slippage. I use a reichard racing 8 rib setup that eliminates quite a bit of belt slippage due to the way it is designed. It sounds to me like the guy that you rode with has a wee bit of rice in him, and likes to show off how gay a BOV can sound.

Yeah I think you are probably right about that, I'm glad then that most centris don't sound like that. Oh an talking about slippage...the front of the engine was coated with belt dust lol.

Oh I know, I think the sound of the eaton is very similar to the KB...that whine is music to my ears lol. Plus the exhaust note is not inturupted by turbines.

I guess I'm back to where I was before lol

I think the whipples make the best sound along with a pullied eaton, but performance wise I wouldn't choose anything but KB. Unless I went TT.

For a 2V, the whipple kit they use on the 03/04 Saleen's (series IV blowers) sounds awesome. For the 4v, they make a few great kits for the Cobra as well, gen II and III. (I believe.)

I actually disagree having heard both of them in person. They do have slight similarities but to me the difference is as clear as night and day.
