Not 100% but I believe it requires new heads. But there is no problem with the head tick with the exception that its annoying.

Yeah if it doesn't have it yet then it most likely won't. My mach 1 had it and it never really bothered me. Most people say the head cooling mod helps prevent this as well.

Can you explain why this head tick happens? From what I understand, one head has cooling issues and can cause detonation which is the tick?

The tick is due to a valve guide getting too hot and going bad, and the cost is going to depend on how much work your going to do, or if your going to have it done, but here are the part numbers for the heads:
The part numbers for the latest Cobra heads (to fix the tick issue) are: Left side head Part # 2C5Z-6049-BAB Right side head Part # 2C5Z-6049-CAB and no one over at SVTPERF probably answered because there are a billion post and a lot of information about the fix in the forum.

Oh Great. I did not realize that this head tick existed. I bought a set of used 03 cobra heads which I am going to port and replace by B-heads with. I will be replacing the guides and adding the cooling mod, should this take care of any issues?
Is there any way to tell if I have the tick by just looking at the heads? Regards,

Just because it doesn't have it doesn't mean it won't get it. If it doesn't have it then invest in a good cooling mod (there are quite a few of them out there) that will prevent the head tick and any other problems that can arise from it.

Does anyone know how to identify the tick if the head is not on the engine?
Are there visual signs of wear, warping, discolouration? Regards!

no, i don't think there is a way. Its possible for a machine shop to look over the heads and give you a report on it, but i think they would have to disassemble the heads for that. When they are on the car it is a clear and annoying sound that everyone hates. There are plenty of youtube videos showing what it sounds like.
It is said that if you have an 04, depending on the build date, you should have revised heads that shouldn't have the issue. my 04 doesn't have it(knock on wood), and i'm at 50k miles. But you never know. good cooling mod should take care of it though

Ok thanks for the info. I bought the heads from a fairly reputable person on the Toronto mustang forums-so I hope they dont have this tick. I'm going to have them ported and rebuilt anyway, so with the colling mod i hope it doesn't come up.

definitely do the mod while the heads are off/ motor is out of the car if possible. I haven't done the mod but from everything ive heard about the install its 10 times easier with the motor out or heads off

If you are having them ported just have the machine shop replace the valve guides. Little bit of extra money but you'll know you are starting out with fresh heads and not have to back track later which will cost even more money.
