01 Cobra Motor in a Mach 1

I know a Cobra motor will fit right in my Mach.. but what are the down sides?

The debates on the forums say the Cobra is a little slower, but is that because of the motor or bc of the factory gear spec differences ( 3.27 vs 3.55 ) Also the question of the compression ratio difference.

Will I even notice the difference in power? Or will it just be the powerband difference? I read that the cobra power is more up top but honestly I felt like my mach had more power up top as well..

my motor crapped out.. long story short everything is good up top and the timeing chain crap is all good. He thinks its a cracked piston and for the money he thinks it would be best to swap for his buddies cobra motor with 10k miles on it. ( all stock )

He wants $2500 minimum to rebuild it ( he didn't give me a exact price bc he hadn't sat down and figured everything up yet for that. )

He think we can get the motor for 2500-3000 and he said he would charge 1k to swap it all out.

What will be the same ? Will I still be able to use the shaker system? What will he just have to swap intakes? And I assume the manifolds and stuff will bolt right up?

Help if you can fellas!

dude you have the perfect oportunity to forge your mach motor.. get a nice rotating assembly it will run you about the same price as a cobra motor or less. and you still need to take motor out for the swap so why dont you just take it out to forge it.

Well the mach has better flowing heads, an 01 cobra has slightly better top end cams. You can reuse all of your mach intake setup, manifolds are almost the same anyway. Id say rebuild the bottom end if you are willing to spend ~4k for the swap. If yours is a stick you have a forged crank and just need rods and pistons if your crank is good and parts for that shouldn't set you back more than 1500. Of course if your cylinder walls are damaged you would have to get it machined, and that is a little more but still not that much.

with 1500 bucks to spend i think you are screwed. unless you can do everything by your self.. you will still need like another 500 or 1000 bucks for machine work and bearings and studs. park it for a few months or something.. i did it to mine because to do my drivetrain i had to come up with 4000 bucks in parts and parked it for a while.. i had to use my girlfriends car.

Well oem parts from ford will probably cost just the same as forged ones, 1500 should cover pistons, rods and whatnot. If you have some tools maybe you should tear it down and do it yourself. Its a few k either way, so you might as well end up slightly better.

If I can't get the cobra motor I will look into aftermarket parts.

I'm not sure what all part I actually need though other than gaskets.. plus he hasn't tore the motor down yet so we don't know what all is seriously hurt or damaged.

i hope you could keep this motor..that much work for the same weak motor is really not worth it in my opinion.

Well I talked to dad and apparently I mis understood..

Robert wants my motor and $2500 for the 01 cobra motor with 10k miles and to swap it in.

What do you guys think?

Man my options are very limited right now.. I don't have to bs around with this thing.. I work 40 hours a week and go to school 4 nights a week also. I am borrowing moms car which is leaving her stranded a lot.. and she works too. I pay 400 a month + insurance( 200 a month ) and the mach is just sitting there.. it is my daily.. my only car I own.

What do you think about the deal I just posted?

btw I have no use for my motor.. as long as it isn't slower and stays running good I don't care if its a mach motor or a cobra motor. I have 4.30 gears so I shouldn't tell a big difference in the cobra motor being that I hear the cobra motors pull better up top over the mach, the gears will put me up top anyway right?

If I actually was doing good financially it would be different. But I have one car, and everything I have coming in .. goes out on bills and school seeing that I got ZERO financial aid. To save up to do what NEEDS to be done.. would take me a year or two.

I was basically in the same position as you last year. The Mach is my only car and I had to bum rides for a half year. If I were in your shoes and couldn't fix the car properly right now, I'd buy a beater that could get me from point A to B and tell the insurance company that you're parkng the Mach and not driving it. That should keep your insurance at a minimum and it will give you time to save up money to get your car fixed.

this is what i would do... for 1000 bucks you can get a beater.. and return the tag of the mach 1 so you could cancel insurance and your license dosnt get suspended. you have to make sure is in a safe place because if the mach gets stolen then you are screwed.

The guy does have a point though. 16 grand is a ton and he's had the car 1-2 years.

Probably started out raped by dealership then got stuck with an 18% loan. Even if he got fucked on the car, 03 mach > b head swap GT. It does suck though, to have a nice car like that break down, and on top of it having payments for a nice car you cant drive.

So what exactly happened to the car anyway, all we know is you are debating fixing your motor, or throwing in a cobra motor. What did/does it do that makes you believe its fucked, what were you doing when it started? Who knows, maybe someone here can help you find a simple or cheaper fix depending on what happened.
