exhaust rattle....

i have a magnaflow catted x-pipe and i think the heat shields for the cats are the prob. When the car has been run for a bit(45 min), i get a rattle around 2k rpm, i know it's the exhaust i'm just wondering if anyone else is having this same prob. and if so, what did you do to fix it? i thinking about cutting the heat shields off,but just want to check first. I know all of my posts have been problems but i swear i this is not my first mach. I bought it used and am now dealing with the last owners sh!t.

I'm running Magnaflow cat-less X pipe and cat back and I'm getting rattle too. When I look under the car I can see that one of the cat back pipes is lightly rubbing the gas tank cover. I've adjusted as much as I can, but it still hits when I hit hard bumps. I'm probably going to cut a 1/4 to 1/2 inch off that pipe to put and end to it.

Check the gas tank cover, it's plastic (on my car anyway) so you will easily see any melting or abrasion.

The guy who owned my Cobra before me put on a SpinTech exhaust setup and it always banged around underneath. Did a terrible job putting it up himself and a lot of crap was installed improperly.

So yeah, I rattled too. Mine hit the control arm pretty good to give you an idea.

Hit the control arm? What in the heck was that guy drinking to pull that one off...

Edit: I'm not familiar with 96 Cobras so maybe it's not that much of a stretch to hit a control arm.

When I got mine, the guy before me had some flowmasters welded in and they did a shitty job and one of the hangers from the stock exhaust that was left under there was laying against the muffler, so at around 2300 rpms it rattled.

I wish I had a photo of it. The exhaust wraps up around the axle and when it came back down it was so misaligned that it was rubbing against the stock lower control arm. It actually put about a 1/4 indent into the control arm from where it was hitting.

This also goes to show how weak the stock control arms are as well, eh? Some metal exhaust beating on the side of it wore it down.

my exhaust rattles too. but the guy before me put in bbk pipes, cat-less x-pipe and flowmaster 40s. the x pipe wasnt bent enough and the mufflers rattle against the drive shaft at when my rpms lower. i just need to get the pipes bent a bit so i can fit them where they are supposed to be and can hook on to the hanger things.

Well sometimes if I drove it a certain way I could get it to not do it. Like if I went really slow past those certain RPMs it wouldn't do it, but I guess if yours won't do it at all until the cars been on for a while it does have something to do with them heating up. Good luck finding it.

im pretty positive it's the heat shields on the cat resinating at 2k. I'm afraid to cut them off cause of the extra heat that will present cause of not having them. I'm going to hit them with a hammer and see if that will change anything. Just an idea, pretty sure it's not going to work
