Newbie, 99 Cobra @9k tell me to buy it
Hi, Im Derek, hopefully soon to be Cobra owner. Hopefully able to productively contribute to the forum as i get to know my car..
97000k, one family car. Nice condition, all recalls. Its an addicting car to drive. I don't feel like the miles are that high after all I've read here.. Price may be a bit high, but i think i can get it for 8-8.5k. I have wanted mustang muscle car for 25years. Tell me its an ok deal. Tell me the miles aren't that high.. Tell me I'm a newb who posted a stupid comment in the wrong place. Just tell me to buy it.. . The wife's on board,, it will be a daily driver. Not looking too mod too much.. But i assume that's what they all said.. Just a reliable, but awesome ride. ![]() thanks guys. |

Depends on what you want to do with the car. If you're a drag racer, I'd suggest a different car. Cobras are designed to be road racing cars, which is why Cobras have better brakes, and as of the '99, IRS. If you want a daily or a corner-carver, it's an excellent choice insofar as Mustangs go.
The '99 IRS is the weakest of all the IRS units, so you'll definitely want to invest in some upgrades there. The guys to talk to are Full Tilt Boogie Racing

^^^ All true, but...
If your looking for a solid, all around car, that would be a fun car to own. Sure, you can drag race it, road race it or get groceries. I would get a compression / leak down test, and if thats good, then sure. Buy it. I road race my GT with 95k miles on it. Runs like new. These engines are solid if they are maintained.

I'm a road guy,, not much for drag racing... Part of the reason i was drawn to the cobra was the irs. I don't know enough to know the 99' was the weakest so that's good to know. And to know who to go to. . It's going to be a daily driver.. it will never see the drag strip.. I could see auto x maybe (total amateur, just for fun),, but mostly just a fun driver.. I just love'm and that I'm finally looking at pulling the trigger has me stoked..

For reference, my search of what to look with compression for turned up
160min-210max,, 15psi between cylinders and for leakdown 10%ish good, 20 bad? I can do it, mech inclined, but its a dealer and ase cert is prefered, so can any firestone type place do it? Can i just do a compression test and if anything if fishy go to comp leakdown? Or are both necessary.. Cheers and thanks |

You can get 03 04 Cobra from Copart which an car auction for 10K with less than 60k and would only have to replace bumpers or other exterior parts. And especially in this economy 03 04 Cobras have gone down to 15k with no more than 50k so I would just save up a bit more and get 03 Cobra which is just ten times the car of a 99. And remeber 100k on any mustang is allot of milage the parts usually have to be start being relpaced around 50k range so at 100k your going to be replacing allot at one point.

He also has a 01 cobra vert with 60k,, its 11k which seems to be a deal, but is still more than 10k at an auction though. I dont have access to auction. We were starting to lean that way though... Will be pulling the trigger Saturday if it shakes down.. It's a pretty nice car also and im partial to verts.. i dont know.. Instincts say 100k is a lot of miles.

I know the terminator is a lot more hp,, but i dont feel like i need it. I think i'd be happy with an 99-01, even 96-98 truthfully .. i guess that makes me pretty dumbs. who knows. i just hope soon i will own the stang ive always wanted and can learn my car and actually contribute to the forum.. ha

Iam just telling you with all the bone stock quick high 12 to fast 10 second cars out there today your going to get smoked by allot of cars that you will run in to and your going to be hating life. And thats not to even mention the really fast modded cars are part of the new common hp street power of today which is from 600hp up to 1000hp.
