97 cobra overheating within 10 min of start up and idle

went to go buy a 96 gt yesterday and the kid lied his A$$ off to me. said it had fresh paint and interior was perfect. kid looked like he painted it at lowes with roller pads and the interior was completly loose and screwed down instead of clipped. but on my voyage home we came across a 97 cobra with 120k miles for 4500? took it for a test drive and it overheated on me within minutes? shit shot out of the overflow tank. guy said it got a little hot on him on his way home from work and hasnt drove it sence i knew the owner, actually pretty honest guy. What could the problem be thermostat sticking? if the car wasnt overheating i feel like this is a steel.

Probably a blown head gasket or warped head. I hate to say if what said is correct then its not worth the asking price. Sorry...

1st thing, i'd check to see if the coolant fan is kicking on. Could be an easy fix if that was the only issue and he didnt drive the shit out of it while overheating. The next probable item would be air locked in the coolant system. These cars are a PITA to properly fill and burp.

If it was just the fan and it puked out enough coolant, it would need to be filled and burped again. If the fan locked up, it will more then likely blown one of the maxi fuses in the engine compartment fuse box.

+1 My fan went out a couple of months ago. I replaced it and the car kept overheating. The car kept overheating because it had air in the lines from when I refilled it. So one problem caused another.

I would check all the easy stuff first, to include thermostat and water pump. check the oil for water, and water for oil, that will tell you if the head gasket blew, it may still have blown and not have those signs but check anyway. Fans are a 2 second check, blast the a/c and watch for them to kick on. If you open the plug on the coolant crossover and start filling thru there it shouldn't be to hard to burp it. Run it for a minute then open up the crossover and fill. If everything checks out then it's probably the head gaskets.

pull the radiator hoses off and poor your coolant/water in there, helps speed up the process. Its taken me 30-45 min at times to fully burmp a 4v motor.

It honestly sounds like its a cooling system problem, not with the motor.
