maybe buying a Mach 1
Hey guys me and the wife are kind of looking at 2003 auto azul blue mach 1 it has 17000 miles on it for 15300. wanting to trade my 07 v6 5 speed in on it. my question is how are the automatics in these cars? are they 4 or 5 speed auto's? also what kind of power gain can one expect from bolt ons with the auto? thanks guys

they are 4 speeds. they are not as fun to drive when they are auto but if you cant live with a clutch i guess i understand. as far as power... well 300whp is a decent goal.

i havnt seen anyone with a 5 speed auto but the 4speed auto on the mach is not a bad transmission. but i have to say something.. teach your girl how to drive stick and if she dosnt want to learn... well then get your self a 5 speed fox body and put some money in your pocket.

Foxs are some sexy mustangs if they're done right.
I'd rather be stuck with an auto Mach than a manual v6 though so congrats on the upgrade! That sounds like a pretty good price considering such low miles it must be in great condition.

Mines not too bad I haven't had any tickets though but I am 19. I do remember it wasn't too much more than a plain GTs insurance though.

The price is on the higher end, but if the car is as clean as you say it is... I say no problems. They only major differences between the 5spd Mach1's and the auto Mach1's is that the auto cars have a cast crank with powered rods. Where as the 5spd car has a forged crank with powered rods. so they're a little weaker.
As far as transmission mods go, you can do enough to it support more power. I would suggest going to bolt on kit, getting a stall converter, and a shift kit to start. Then after that we'll talk about more serious mods.. Here's a list of basic boltons: Headers (I think most people will agree with me when I say that longtubes are the only way to go.) Mid Pipe (depending if you have emissions or will determine if you can run an o/r h or x pipe.) Cat Back (listen to sound clips on you tube. Everyone has their own opinion of what sounds better.) Intake Spacer (Roys Custom Intake Spacers) Throttle Body (Accufab seems to be the better of the bunch) CAI or RAI (C&L is good if you want to spray, JLT is good as well.) Gears (4.10 or 3.73 is what I would reccomend) Aluminum Driveshaft Aluminum Flywheel Lowering Springs (If you go lower than 1.5" you're going to need Camber/Caster Plates.) Camber/Caster Plates Upper Control Arms (I prefer adjustables..) Lower Control Arms (adjustable ones..) Frame Ties Drag Radials- Wider and stickier tires are must if you want to

These seem to be the most commonly reccomended for 4vs. A lot of people say 3.55s to 3.73s is not worth it.

well Machs come stock with 3.55's. 3.73's would be an absolute waste of money. I just put in 4.10's and love them. If i didn't do that much hw driving i would have put in 4.30's. To the thread poster- stay away from underdrive pulleys!!!!!!

I seriously considered 4.56s. If it wasn't so much to have them installed or it was easy to install gears I would def. try them out, but I'm going the safe route with 4.30s. I mean the only local track is an 1/8th mile track and I hardly do highway driving so 4.56s didn't sound like a bad idea, it's just I'd probably take my car to the track once or twice and if I didn't like them on the street it'd cost that much more to have the 4.30s installed.

I almost bought an Auto Mach1. It was a blast to drive. A guy around here had a Auto Mach with bolt ons and a 4.10 gear and it ripped.
