How hard should it be to turn the crank?

Ok so, When i bought the cobra the guy told me that the motor was locked up and his mechanic told him he couldnt turn it over-

When you try to start it, it JOLTS like a hard clank sound-

Well yesterday i Got out a ratchet and a breaker bar, and i can turn the motor over by hand- its not easy (not really alot of room to work with either) but its doable- it turns over-

I took the starter out (which is in a shitty location might i add lol) took it to get tested, and it "passes" the test, but sounds horrible, the auto parts place said "i wouldnt put it back in"

Im starting to have the slightest hope that the starter might just be bad-

Should the motor be that hard to turn over by hand? (note the spark plugs are still in)

the motor is kind of hard to turn over.. it takes about 45 to 50 ftlbs of torque to turn it. i tell you this because this is the first torque i applied to the flywheel bolts and at 45ft lbs it started to spin and i had to buy the tool to hold the flywheel.

Funny story

when i was taking the Jesus Bolt off (harmonic balancer bolt), I was having serious trouble getting it lose. With the the parking break set and in 5ith gear, i was still spinning the tires.

I finally used a pipe on a breaker bar and a hammer...fixed the problem

i had to take the pulley off with the motor on an engine stand. i was a PITA. took a 1/2 inch breaker bar and a 6 foot steel poll for torque. even w that it was still pretty tough.

*threw a bolt through the flywheel that got caught on the engine stand so the crank wouldnt turn.

ovcourse i was lucky enough to find tons of shavings in the oil pan. (spun 2 rod bearings and crank got torn up) ... at least its re build time

I know you already found out that the rod didnt want to stay in the block but just to answer your question..............with the plugs still in the motor will be stiff to turn by hand.............with the plugs out so you arent fighting the compression it will spin much easier.
