Header/backpressure question
Ok, well i searched for a litttle bit and didnt come up with anything. Anyway i have a 99 cobra with bbk long tube headers, orh pipe, highflow cats, and magnaflow mufflers that dump right in front of the irs.
I dont want the high flow cats on anymore, I want the loudest sound i can get. Due to the fact muffler man wont cut off my cats and i live 15 mins from them is it ok if i cut off my cats and run completely open headers for 10 miles? i know you can burn up a valve and throw flames but am i safe? how long can i drive? should i keep it below a certain rpm? etc? also do you guys think i should leave the high flow cats on? i really dont want to bring tools to the muffler man shop and have to cut off the cats in the parking lot lol |

you will be ok driving that far... i just wouldnt be seeing how fast you can go in between your house and there... oh, and btw, keep your cats, you can sell them for about 50 bucks a piece to someone that buys them. They have like gold and silver in them or something like that. Cant remember which metals they are

^^^^^what he said, or take off the mid pipe, fill the cats with gas and drop a match, burn them out, or gut them with a pipe and knock the material out

yeah, a lot of shops around here charge you 100 to cut out the cats and then sell the cats for 100 and make double the money. lol

well supposedly in michigan no shops are allowed to at all. The guy at muffler man said no one in michigan will do it. They say its not worth the $10,000 fine they get charged if they get caught cutting one off.

bud backpressure and burning valves is a complete myth.
run open headers all day and you will be fine as long as your 02 are still connected. That backpressure/burnt valve myth started when people started replacing stock carbed cars' log style exhaust manifolds with headers. The carbs were tuned with the logs on. The headers allowed more air to enter the combustion chamber per revolution of the engine. Without re jetting the carbs, it will run lean and lead to a burned a valve.

Sorry to highjack tis thread, but do ceramic headers provide a sublte performance gain over chrome headers? What are the advantages of going with a catless h-pipe over a catted h-pipe?

Running open long tubes wont hurt you. if they hurt then why are all drag cars open headers. as long as they are lts you are fine

they will both rust, ceramic will just run cooler on the out side and keep the heat inside the header tubes that helps velocity. the only header that will not rust is 304 stainless steel

the ceramic will produce a little more power due to the heat being kept inside the tubes and creating more velocity

I always hear alot about back pressure. The fact is , the faster exhaust can flow, the better!! What you want is good flow.

Why not just buy a o/r h-pipe and save the catted H for "justin case" .

it has a little to do with flow, of course you want good flow, but the main thing is scavenging, you want the scavenging to help pull the next exhaust pulse out
