Pilot or Throw out?

not really sure which bearing is going out. The other night i was messing around with a heavily modded gt on the highway and when i slammed into fourth the tires chirped not barked. Never have had that happen before but i was pretty stoked! Now i have this noise in the tranny and it changes pitch and the almost goes away when the clutch is all the way in. It sounds like sandpaper on metal. Also when i have driven around a bit and everything has had a chance to warm up it almost seems like the noise completely goes away. The two bearings will only cost about 80 bucks (ford racing) but if it's the pilot bearing the install price goes up another 75 bucks on top of the 275 to put in a throw out bearing. Just trying to save money anyway i can. Christmas is coming up you know. Thanks for any input guys!!

The pilot bearing will not make a noise when the clutch is engaged because the input shaft is turning at the same speed as the crankshaft and the bearing isnt turning. Actually very rarely at all does a pilot even make noise when its bad you usually feel a light vibration because the clutch disk is not centered on the flywheel. If the car is stopped in gear with the clutch pedal depressed and you can still hear the noise it is definetly your throw out bearing.

that sounds like a throwout bearing to me man. especially cuz you mentioned that the noise goes away with the clutch in.

well i mean i doesn't completely go away but i mean when i even put the slightest amount of pressure on the clutch the amount of sound and pitch changes. And why would the sound almost go away when everything is warmed up? also what can happen if i wait to long to fix it? I know nothing good, but i want to know when i have reached the failure point. And, sorry, i might as well do the pilot as well while they are in there; which defeats the whole thread cause both will be replaced. Non the less i kind of want to know which one it actually is so i know in the future
