Used GT500 or New GT?

I'm in the market for a new car this spring, or whenever I find a good deal really. My question is, with the new 5.0, which one is a better buy? They both fall in the same ball park for price (35k-38k); I don't need any comments about the price. Based on performance, handling, and quality, which one is a better buy? Can't wait for a good discussion.

well, i got a new 5.0. i was actually thinking the same thing. It really depends on what you end goals are.

I wish i woulda went with the shelby now though. I love my car but the shelby is built tough and easy to do a pulley upgrade and boltons for alot of HP. its already lower compression and forged. The 5.0 is nice but i have one of the first ones built, the tranny will grind periodically but not enough for ford to fix it. It is really irritating to spend 33gs on a car and have that. The new idle system doesnt like the rain at all. Do the "relearn" idle which makes it idle great until it rains... it runs great besides those 2 issues.

Buy a shelby and trade me LOL

The 5.0 is nasty, but dude go with a GT500. So much nastier. More power, and cheaper/easier to make more power.

I agree with everyone else, the 5.0's are awesome, but the GT500's have a much better platform for modding, and will have a higher resale value if you ever decide to let it go.

Yeah, this is what drew to the GT500 at first. Lethal sells a pulley, belt and tensioner set that will add a nice boost for practically nothing.

yeah the gt500 is badass man, the new 5.0 doesent even touch one unless your talking about interior quality or something like that. granted, the new 5.0 isnt really meant to run with a gt500 either, and they are amazing cars with 412 hp in stock form. but for the same price you could get a badass car and make it into a street monster for cheap as hell and the gt500s just look sick. plus nothing beats blower whine.

you guys realize that the major factor that always seperated the gt from the gt500 was the heads and supercharger right? and the new 5.0's have the same if not better heads than the gt500 and this man can buy a better supercharger so i feel the gt500 has lost a LOT of ground since this new 5.0 came out...

You're forgetting the GT500s have a fully forged rotating assembly.

OP get the GT500.

I lost her about a month ago in the rain going around a 2 lane turn on a mountain and got ran off the road into a guard rail by the car beside me. It didn't help that I had Nitto 555Rs on the back either, not as much traction as I would have liked.

I knew the GT500 rotating internals were forged, but I don't have very much info on the new 5.0 engine. I knew the gap was closing, but I'm NOT looking for a street monster with full forged internals. The GT500 seems like the best platform for a easily obtainable 500+ horsepower car, with light mods and tune.

Thanks for all the info fellas.

If you do get a new 5.0 you know it will be unmolested though and if it is built after may 10 the pressure plate bolts and syncro problems seem to be ironed out. I wouldnt worry about direct injection tho, someone will make a kit or u can part it together if you really want it. Even tho the pistons arent forged on the 5.0 they seem to be good for alot of horses. if JPC can take them to 800rwhp im sure they can handle 550 all day long. Plus, the aftermarket is going to be HUGE for the 5.0 and engines will be cheaper if something does go wrong. You wont see to many gt500 motors in the junkyard or on ebay. It seems like ford plans on stuffing these motors into alot more then just the mustang.

But like myself and everyone stated before the gt500 is an amazing car and will have better resale/collectablity. So if you want to keep it a long time and beat it get a 5.0 if not get the gt500.

I am all about new and knowing that it wasn't potentially beat on. The new 5.0 has so much potential and just baddass from the get go imo. Plus it is amazing the comfort upgrades they have done with these compared to the 2005-2009 models. Just saying.

If it's not a 2011 GT500 get a 2011 GT.

I'm not swinging with y'all. I don't like fat cars that are over 2 tons with a driver.

New GT you get a warranty. (Full, not leftover)

GT500 motors aren't as good as they are made up to be, they don't have the same H beam connecting style rods as the 03/04 Cobra, and the rods are longer and not nearly as strong. I've seen GT500's toss rods at 600-650 rwhp. A 03/04 Cobra would never throw a rod at the level with even a pretty bad tune and driver.
