to solid rear or not to solid rear?

well guys ive been debating on wether i want to keep the IRS in my 04 cobra or swap to a solid rear. my goals for the car are i want a car that will be able to hold its own at the strip without breaking but still be able to handle well for auto X and stuff whenever i feel like it. im more concerned with the handling because if i go to the dragstrip its just for fun and im not really looking for a drag setup i just want something that wont break! and i want something that wont overheat when i do auto X events and stuff like that because i dont have the funds to buy a diff cooler right now. anyway im just kindof tired of the headaches of the IRS when you actually want to do something besides drive around with it but im kindof reluctant to do the SRA swap for some reason. any thoughts?

i autocross with a solid rear axle and ive never heard of overheating a differential, or a diff cooler for that matter. If you are concerned with the handling then i would stick with the IRS.

With the quick laps on the autocross course, I don't think I would wory about an overheating diff. What type of money are you wanting to spend? You can build an SRA to handle as well as an IRS. You can also build an IRS to hold up to the rigors of drag racing. It all takes money though. If you plan on spending little to no money, I would just stick with the IRS and take it easy on launch at the strip.

yeah haha. cobras diffs get really hot because the exhaust is routed right under the diff. this is not a problem on the SRA and they never over heat. the IRS however has lots of heat problems and the reason why its such a risk for me is because i have the fore precision works diff cover which will prevent me from leaking and breaking my diff cover which is also a big problem with IRS but in the instructions from FORE it says DO NOT open track or auto X without a diff cooler or the diff will over heat due to the cover being thicker and a different material that traps more heat than stock, which would be fine except a diff cooler is $1300, bushing kit all said and done is close to 800-1000 depending...halfshafts are 1800 for strong ones..IRS is expensive

IRS is VERY expensive.

You are already on a good start though. That Fore Diff cover is beast. I am really surprised they say do not autox with it. The 1 minute runs could not possibly heat it up that bad. At least I would not think so.

That's what I had to do. I have a brace, and the beginnings of the MM bushing kit. Had to rebuild the damn internals a few months ago though. Luckily the case held strong and the gears were ok.

Pinion pin backed out and caused everything to start slipping. Clutches fried. But nothing broke apart. Car was still driveable.

Theres a lot of guys out ther wanting the IRS. If you decided to do a SRA swap you could sell the IRS and build a stout SRA.
