which cams for a 5.4 navi build?
sold one of my cobra motors, and finally got my 5.4 navi motor taken apart and cleaned at the machine shop. The cam journals on the heads are a little rough, but salvageable, and now that christmas is past I plan on ordering everything to get the 5.4 built and put in my car. I decided to run around 9.5 compression so i can spray it later, but I still need to figure out which cams to use. I have a set of mach 1 cams (out of an aviator) and then the ones that came out of the navigator. Ive heard that they're similar. Another option Ive been looking at was the high lift cam kit from ford Ford Racing M-6550-T46 Ford Racing 4.6L DOHC 4V Camshaft Kit
has anyone used this kit? it's got a ton of duration, but idk about the lift

if your going to spray it go with a lil higher compression...and if you want cams in it go with some custom cams

oops, 12mm lift... so .47 inches. Still not sure if the followers are a different ratio though

I also wanted to have the option of running a centrifugal supercharger. I've heard of people running 9.8, but my engine dyno software didn't seem to make a huge difference past 9.5 and i'd rather play it safe. If i go the centrifugal route i'll probably use methanol injection as well

I believe the navi cams are the same as the mach/marauder/aviator/cobra. Those cams are way too small for a 5.4 build. I am going with crower stage 3 blower cams, but if you aren't going to rev real high and whatnot something with similar specs to the crower stage 2 blower cam will probably work pretty well for you. The fr500 kit you link to isnt a bad kit for NA, but is less than ideal for a supercharger. If I were you id ditch the navi heads and go for some 04/05 c heads so you have better intake options. What intake are you going with?

Thanks man, but I already have a set of tumbeport heads I was working on porting. What sucks is that I spent like 5 hours porting the 4.6 intake =P
Thanks DickH, I'll look into crower cams, so far I was going to go with lunati. Do those blower cams require valve springs? Also, hows the street performance (idle, drive ability, gas mileage)? This car is my daily driver other than my bike, so i need something practical. As far as intakes go, I'm probably going to cut the flanges with the injector boss's off the stock navigator intake and use 2" aluminum tubing to form short runners. Then just a box for the upper and probably the dual blade throttle body of the navi. Hate to go to all the trouble, but it doesn't look like i have many options =P

found the specs for the stage 2 blower cams on crower's site... they look about what I was wanting as far as duration and lift, but they do recommend valve springs. Did you buy valve springs from them as well? or have your factory ones held up?

Most stage 2 cams from any dealer require upgrades. The stage 1s use stock components.

You are going to need springs with any decent cam, I am lucky and got my hands on a fr500 cam kit for cheap and then sold the cams so I have the springs and valves from that. Also a navi lower intake is far from ideal, you will lose a chunk of low and mid range, and you probably wont rev it high enough for the short runners to give you any top end. You would probably be better off just getting adapter plates and using a cobra/mach intake.

Ats That's what I figured, I'll look around and see who has a good deal on springs.
I don't plan on using the lower manifold, just the flanges off it (as opposed to adapter plates) I'll use them for the base and build a sheet metal intake from that

idk if i want to go stage 3 with it being my daily driver and poly motor mounts... it already shakes the car a bit at idle lol
So another question... what do ya'll do about tuning? I was thinking sniper and then i read the ONLY review on their site that said it advanced his timing too much and blew his engine... but it could just be some dumbass that didn't know what he was doing

I haven't had any experience with either, but from what little I have read it seems like if you are going to do it yourself the sniper is the better option. I plan on tuning mine with a sniper when its all ready for it so ill have to wait and find out how easy it is to work with.
