I recently picked up a 99 SVT Cobra Saleen convertible. I had 2 different mechanics check it out, and was told by both that the engine is shot. No compression on the drivers side bank. It has 88k on the engine. I am not totally convinced of this. I am trying to find someone in the Sacramento area that is familiar with this motor, and can give me an honest answer. Supposedly this is a super hi-perf motor, assembled by one person only. I was told that it is easier to replace the engine. Why can't this be torn down and if something is found, fixed? I am old school, so that's what we used to do with engines. I know nothing of these modular motors. Any help would be awesome.

sounds to me like someone was blowing alot of smoke up your ass. you can re-build a 4v 4.6.
people do it all the time.

the only intimidating thing about the modular motors (especially a 4v) is all the cam shafts. other than that, an engine is an engine. they all work/go together the same way basically.
