Turbo Configuration
Lately I've been toying with the idea of fabricating a twin turbo system for my car. But the toughest part of this is determining where the twin turbos will actually sit. Most of Hellion's systems locate them behind the bumper just above the foglights, but this appears to be more difficult than it needs to be. I've also seen them mounted in the HMRO (high mount rear out) integrated onto the manifolds on an SN-95. The third option I've considered is having them both located just ahead of the engine, perpendicular to the direction of travel. Think like the typical single turbo setup, but with two, one toward either side of the engine compartment. They could be in either configuration of intake pointing toward center, or intake pointing toward fenders. This would be fairly easy, as I already have the battery relocated to the trunk, and the A/C delete. My only concern about this arrangement would be trying to acquire cold air for this configuration, and the potential heatsoak to the radiator. The cold air could likely be plumbed to a custom hood scoop, or routed around the radiator.
Also, does anyone know if the exhaust ports are symmetrical? I remember on the old SBC 350's they were, so you could basically flip the exhaust manifolds. If you could do that here, you could have your own forward facing manifolds with little effort. Any other suggestions of configurations are greatly appreciated. Pictures of your routing would help also.

several people do the twins in the engine compartment infront of the engine. usually they have filters pointing toward each other inside the engine compartment. as for radiating heat from the head units, people uaully wrap them or use a turbo blanket. you can turn the manifolds around if that is what you are looking to do.

Thanks for the input guys. Pretty much what I expected, but very happy to not get any "Yeah...no way in hell that's going to work." responses.
The picture Scott showed is one of the configurations I was contemplating. I would opt to clock the turbos slightly differently and run the intake transfer pipes around the sides of the radiator though. Going HMRO would be great, its extremely common on HD engines, simplifies plumbing and is very efficient. Unfortunately that would be a dead give away to the fact I have twin turbos, and I'm going to try to stay somewhat stealthy. Definitely thanks for the info about the manifolds, that will make my life dramatically easier. I'm also going to look into the feasibility of a twin compound setup with a similar orientation. I constantly see it on display on an L10 engine at work, and I can't help but wonder. And in case your wondering the platform is likely going to be a 4.6L DOHC (hence being posted in the 4v section.) I had briefly contemplated a 5.4L DOHC, but with space already at a premium for turbos, no sense in making it more difficult. Plus at that point it is just total overkill. Of course If I come across a cheap Navigator engine it's not out of the question... ...and what's with all the turbo threads lately? Am I hopping on the new trend?

if you have a 4v...look into HPP kits NOT HP but HPP

HMRO- High Mount Rear Out. Sorry, used to these acronyms from work. For inlines that mount the turbo directly to a flange on the exhaust manifold the three most common are HMRO, MMRO, and LMRO: High Mid and Low mount, Rear Out.
Also any thoughts on running a crossover pipe upstream of the turbos to ensure equal pressure? I've seen configurations both with and without this. I know it's pretty much a requirement for asymmetrical setups, but I'd like to run true twins. Currently I'm leaning toward a configuration with the intakes facing the fenders. I think this would minimize flow restriction on the hot side, as well as allow you to push the chargers toward the fenders, reducing any possible interaction with the belt drive/radiator. Not only this but it would let you possibly plumb cold air intakes behind the headlights.

I'm an engineer. It's kind of my job to overthink things.
![]() Plus everywhere I go at work I'm literally surrounded by dozens of massive turbocharged engines. Only seems fitting.
