97 cobra build list help!!
So say I have a 97 cobra, with a rod knock. The engine is a remanned pos that needs to be pulled out and rebuilt.
Will a mark 8 block be fine will all of my cobra stuff (heads, intake, headers, etc) be fine on this engine? I know these are cheaper than the cobra 8 bolt cranks. Would this be fine until I can rebuild the cobra block? What would be some good power adders to throw on to the engine once its back in? Im sure with the mark 8 block it cant handle too much, or can it? I guess I need some help. If anyone in the VA area is willing, while I am out to sea, rebuild the engine for me. I am going on deployment and need some help. I can pay well. Prefer a shop from someone on here which would be bad ass but who knows. I will pay since I wouldnt want to lose the car. Thanks. I know its a long shot

Yes its the same block, the major difference is what you already stated, cobras have a 8 bolt crank while the Mark VIII have a 6 bolt cast crank. They also have a calmer intake cam and more restrictive exhaust which is the only thing that hinders the same performance levels of the same year cobras, and possibly a tune might help. I dont know if the 96-98 cobras have the IMRC plates liek the Mark VIII's do, but its an easy delete as most go this route. I have a Mark VIII sitting in my garage waiting to go in, but im waiting to forge the components before I do the swap.

from what I hear, the delete is an easier route than trying to wire up the butterfly switch to some window switch, and also there is myth that it has a 5HP increase...

Well, picked up a mark 8 engine with trans, complete as when it was in the car for 300 buck 75000 miles, ran fine when i saw the video, saw pics of it being pulled etc. Should be in the cobra, then rebuilding the 97 engine. Maybe save for a termi swap. Be out of the Navy in may so may be saving up some for when I am out...

Hey Hurricane, i have a block just cleaned up and honed, some je stock size forged pistons and 04 manley rods. was about to get it ready to drop in my car and came down for orders to korea so not gonna waste money and time for it to sit for 2yrs.
mayosailor, i know we talked before and see you have the motor and trans already, but still have a cobra intake and b heads sitting around like to get rid of it all if it can be used instead of sitting and going to waste. Dont have the rep on here to sale yet but have lots of stuff. a rebuilt 97 cobra t45 trans also. As Far as the IMRC deletes i just left the butterflies off and lined up the arms to take up less air. cant say it added more power but with the 410 gears i cant tell anymore lag down low and there is no hesitation from 3250rpms and up now pulls hard.. |

I have the old engine I was going to use for parts-- intake,(upper/lower), heads not yet since I want cams, manifolds, good trans, another clutch now for the mark 8 engine with an aluminum 6 bolt 11 inch flywheel (craigslist). Mostly everything I need. 410's are the next addition and getting rid of those 373's.

Ya know, the noise, from what i remember while being out her eon deployment still for the past 9 months---- th enoise was like a rattle on start up. it was pretty consistent with engine speed. I know the clutch was burnt to death (heel toe burnout) But besides that, i guess it could be timing chains, maybe a tensioner. MAYBE a lash adjuster. Any more ideas? I kind of think the idea of an adjuster is out because it's noisy on start up, unlike being cold with thick oil-- it wouldnt make noise. So, leaning towards-- throw out bearing, input shaft bearing, or chains. COuld be the balancer (harmonic balancer) like a guy at Dyno Tuned Performance said--- when it gets worn, pulled back into the cover it can make noise due to how the chains are behind the cover. Any ideas anyone? How about some one from indiana close to somerset want to go check it out for me?? Email me with ideas, etc. MAYOR@LHD5.NAVY.MIL thanks
