Question

A couple "riddle me this" questions

Hey Guys, just made the cross from the GT to Cobra side a couple days ago. I have a few questions, while not neccessarily Cobra specific, but I figured I might as well ask here first. First off, im not sure if the previous owner put some kind of aftermarket cam in or not, but it sounds like it has a slight lope to it at idle, although nothing is noticable from the rpms. Whenever I get into the 2600 to 3000 RPM range(unless im throttling through it) I get this nasty sounding noise, almost if a "scraping" or grinding noise...secondly the guy put lowering springs(idk what brand) on and now when I make turns or hit lil bumps they creak and squeek quite a bit, is this a sign of new springs settling in, or the struts being worn out? The car also has full length weld in sub-frames, but I dont know if that woud cause noise or not. Other than that, i have no complaints, if I need to relay more info on the car, please ask, im more than willing to help you, help me Thanks alot guys

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the guy just installed an aftermarket clutch and flywheel not too long ago, I was told...

As far as the squeks and rattles, this could be a few things. If he put aftermarket springs on, he may have left off the rubber isolators to get even more of a drop. That is what I did, and I get some road noise when hitting bumps. Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I would have got a much lower spring and used aftermarket iso's.

Also, a popular mod on the IRS Cobras is to replace the bushings. Depending on the style of bushing used to replace, you are going to get some road noise.

If you can get ahold of the guy you purchased the car from, just ask him a bit more about what all has been replaced or upgraded.

Awesome thanks for the help on the noise matter, where might I look around for aftermarket isolators and possible an IRS Bushing kit? Ill double check to make sure he hasnt done so already, im assuming your referring to Poly Bushings that tend to make noise comapred to rubber, correct me if im wrong. And i would like to get ahold of the owners, but I purchased the car from a Volvo Dealership and I dont think they would give that info to me

p.s. Repped btw for the awesome help

American Muscle sells the iso's. Just look for their springs and scroll down to accessories and you can't miss it.

And no, the dealership wouln't let you know who they got the car from. Tried that before on a past vehicle.

We can cut a coil and put some isolators in sometime bro.

Maximum motorsports sells a quality iso.

only place to go for irs bushing IMHO is fulltiltboogieracing.com. Bruce sells a top notch setup and you will LOVE the IRS even more with his kit.

I would suggest the MM iso's if you dont have access to some stock units. they are a bit thicker than stock but much more durable.

Yes poly can transmit more NHV (noise harshness vibration) than rubber but rubber will also be sloppy and result in broken irs parts in time.

best cure for solving those typical rattles and such of a mustang is a nice loud exhaust setup!

Whew...I heard that kit is like $600, better start saving my pennies and nickels lol, as for the iso's I was looking at them on AM, but il take a gander at the MM ones first. I know sport cars have a noisy suspension setup, but I just want to quiet them as much as I can so im not worrying about lil squeak and rattle

Bruce's kit isnt cheap but it is less expensive and better quality than kits that others sell and you cant go wrong with his customer service. It is top notch!

You are going to drive yourself crazy if you chase every lill squeak and rattle in these cars.

Not trying to hijack this thread but that's a really good idea. I never thought about cutting these springs then adding the isos to quiet and smooth out the ride. Your a geniouse Brandon.

It's not a big deal. You'll spend more time removing the springs than you will cutting them.

That is an awesome write-up, the only thing is it talks about the stock springs being linear springs, my car has H&R Springs, can I still cut them without any issues?
