Looking at my first Cobra

Hey guys, I'm looking at my first four valve mustang and I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on it. I'm looking at a 2003 Cobra with

2.9 pulley
Lower pulley
K&N cone filter
Custom DeZ racing tune with SCT tuner
Billet interior knobs
Short throw shifter
Tinted tail lights
Shorty antenna
Black steel COBRA bumber inserts
2 month old magnaflow catback with cats
40 percent tint

He says it made around 450 hp and 450 tq.

Its got 54000 miles on it and hes looking to get 18300 for it. Do you guys think thats a good price, and is there anything in particular that I should look for when I go look at it?

I would offer 17 and go from there. Seems like a good deal to me, but I don't know shit about cobra's so i couldn't really tell you what to look for.

Listen to it run. Watch out for the dreaded head tick.

The only other thing to watch out for is snapping IRS components, but at 450hp you don't see that too much.

Sounds pretty nice and clean though, you don't see too many of those around.

Listen for the dreaded IRS "Clunk", it usually happens when you first start to take off or come to a stop, its not serious, but its just the bushings deteriorating. Sounds pretty good, price sounds a lil high, but with the shorty antenna mod, I would be sold!

That is a really good price, especially considering where you live. I was looking at one in NY with 60,xxx for $20k...that is what they seem to be average.
I'd be careful, but if everything looks good, get it

Found the head tick on the youtube.

Sounds like more of a "tapping" than a tick.

Does he have dyno slips to show that kind of horsepower? That could be right but it seems a lot of people just guess at hp and most times high. Also crank or rear wheel hp? Looks good in pics.

Just look for rust under the car - salt destroys it up there, I know first hand.

Offer $17000 and you'll end up at $17500. Either way is a good deal. If the interior is not damaged or ripped, jump on it. You will not find a funner car for that money.

Also with those mods is it safe to take the tune off the car to do emissions? Here in CT you have to have the ecu stock to pass.

Possibly, as long as you drive it reeeeeal gently and stay out of boost.

But seriously, stock ECU? Does that mean factory tune? How do they tell?

Guess I'm never moving to CT. I don't even think CARB requires that. Especially since if you keep your cats things like a 93 octane tune will not harm emissions whatsoever.

yeah it sucks, they plug in an obd II scanner and look for codes but I've heard of a lot of people failing because their tunes turn off the error codes.

Ah, it's probably no different than most states. It's a gray area. Most tunes turn off certain features (such as emissions) by listing them as "Not ready", which will in turn throw a P1000 system not ready code. Without all systems ready, you won't pass. But if your car is tuned properly, they will register as "N/A" and it will be ready.

Get a cheap OBDII and see if you have the P1000 code, or if any of the systems are listed as "not ready." If none of that comes up, you're fine.

actually the IRS clunk is due to the IRS shifting a little under load because the front IRS bolts are the incorrect 12mm bolts and too small for the 14mm hole. Maximum motorsports sells the correct 14mm bolts for this for like 15 dollars. put them in my cobra and it cleared it right up. FWIW. nice cobra! youll love it

Hey guys, so the red termi i was looking for didn't work out, now I'm looking at a blue 03 with 68,000 miles. Its at a dealership and has a 3 year warenty, and they're asking $21,000 for it. How much would you guys think I should pay for it and how many miles can you put on these cars before you need to put some serious work into them?

Sonic Blue? That is my dream Termi 68K isnt bad for an '03 but guessing if it is stock I would look more towards a price of 18K-20K from a dealer depending on where you are...
