What do I need for a T56 Swap???
I have a 96' Cobra and I picked up a 98-02 Trans Am / Camaro T56 for 650 bucks in good conditon and just wanted to know what all I need to install it correctly? I am going to have the driveshaft modified, is the bell housings the same? And I would imagine I need a different crossmember.

Well some of us 4v converts can help anyways. lol
Anyways, I'd say you're in some trouble if you bought the GM spec T-56. I'm receiving my T-56 this week so I'll give you the shakedown. The first show stopper is the shifter location. The GM ones use the main housing location, whereas the Ford ones use the tailshaft housing location. It's going to cost some to get them lined up. Or you can hack a hole in your console. Up to you. Now the other fun bits: Driveshaft- or modify your existing one. Harness- or modify your existing one. The big difference is the reverse solenoid lockout. Details in Jazzer's thread. Bell housing- I don't believe the Ford and GM ones are identical. Cross member- You can use the 03/04 Cobra, or hack and modify your existing one. I think those are the major ones. I believe GM at least uses the same mag pulse VSS as the Ford, but the Dodge does not. Also check what spline it is. T-56 typically come in stock 10 spline or upgraded 26 spline. EDIT: Jazzer's detailed how-to guide: T-3650 ~ T-56 swap in the works...

That link is awesome man, yeah it is the center section GM T-56, I am going to ask the guy that I go through for everything how much he will charge to move it to the rear. I am not going to hack up anything. I want to make sure I do it right. That thread link is bad ass, thanks again for posting that! I hope the rest of this goes smooth. I guess we will see

the 96-98 crossmember is different than the little 99-04 crossmember. You can use your stock crossmember it just needs to be moved slightly which your crossmember brackets should allow you to do. At least with a Cobra t56. I imagine that part would be the same.
Check out my project thread for a little more information on putting a cobra t56 in a 98 gt. Quite a bit should apply. Also with the gm t56 I believe the input shaft is too long so you will need a new one, and the bellhousings are different. The biggest hurdle is the shifter location as far as I know.

![]() You can see why I went with the straight up Cobra swap. Unfortunately it means you're going to have to shell out more. A GM T56 can be had for under $1000, but a Cobra will go for $1500+ all day long. Shit luck having a Ford, but what can you do? I had to bite the bullet because I need the extra strength, and the Cobra authenticity doesn't hurt either. Also I just confirmed my transmission is in at the terminal up in Indy, going after work! Woo!
