How to clean up after a bad oil change...

So this afternoon I change the oil in the Ion and then move on to the Mach 1. For any of you that have changed the oil on a 4V you know it's a tight fit and a pain in the ass to get the filter back on (and off for that matter). So I'm tightening the filter back up and the hand tool won't move anymore so I thought it was tight. I had actually hit the aftermarket oil pressure sensor so you can now see where this is going. I fill the engine back up with Royal Purple...

I looked under the car and no leaks. I start the car up and back it off the ramps to move it over one spot in the apartment parking lot. I throw it in first and I thought son of a bitch the clutch is slipping. I turn the car off and get out. There is oil all over the parking lot. I ran back to the apartment and grabbed a 5 gallon container full of cat litter. I used all of that to clean up the oil that was scattered around the lot. Time to check that oil filter again. Oh it's not tight (point finger at head and pull trigger). Tightened it up and filled the oil. No more leaks.

So for all of you out there have a good laugh and make sure to double check that the filter is tight before you turn your garage or parking lot into an ice-free skating rink.

That sucks. With the tool I got you put it on the filter and can only only move it a couple cm. my problem lately has been putting the filters on too tight so it makes a nightmare to get it back off

You could also put a little oil around the gasket ring on the filter to make it eaier to take off, but thats if you didn't already know that.

You dont have to do anyting more than hand tighten the oil filter if you lube up the seal, makes it alot easier to remove aswell.

Sorry to hear about your messy ordeal.

Must be something different with the area around the oil filter in the Machs and my 99 Cobra. Mine's easy to get to and take off, and put back on by hand. Gotta jack the car and drain the oil first, but other than that it's easy.

Yup that's what I do, I just changed my oil and it took less than 15 min. When I first got my car it took forever since the filter was a bitch to get off

although access to the filter is much more open. with the oil cooler and tubular k member I can only use certain lower profile filters.

Tubular K member helped out a lot, and I don't use a tool to tighten my filters. I use my big ole bear paws. Never had one come loose in years.

this is very true. i can only use the mobil 1 filter on my car. the motorcraft filter is too long. so, i know all too well what you mean. its a shock how much a 1/16" difference in filter height makes.

Out of 20 years of oil changes I forgot to put the oil plug back on before filling my truck about 6 months ago. I was in a hurry and poured all 5 quarts in too.
