Strange Noise. What could it be?

I have a 98 cobra.

It makes a strange noise that i would describe as a clunking sound. This happens when i accelerate and when i let off the gas - only in gear.

If i hold a constant RPM/speed the noise is nonexistent. This noise occurs about 75 % of the time that i accelerate/decelerate.

It is very annoying/embarrassing when audible.

Anyone know what to start looking at or what it could be?

5 speed or auto? coming from front or back? which side? start by checking your lug nuts..mine was doing the same a month or so ago and i thought it was a u joint. turned out that the drivers side lugs on the rear were loose and had bout half an inch of play in the wheel lol. other than that it sounds like u joints to me. thats what i would put the bet on

So the noise seems to be coming from the front of the passenger side of the car.. Again it is a clunking/ squeking sound.

Anyone else had a similar experience or know what could cause this?

OP, did you do your brakes any time recently? I had a similar issue when I bought a set of pads and they had forgot to put the anti-rattle clip in the box (and I didn't know enough at the time to know it was necessary). Once I got it in there, the clunking went away.

I do feel something in my clutch pedal but i dont think it is related...the clutch pedal rattles unless i lightly put my foot on it. I think my cable might be stretched b/c my clutch pedal actually sits about an inch or so above the others- i think i should adjust that haha

Ill check out the exhaust hangers..

And Reverend, no brake work has been recently.

I was thinking U joint after doing some searches but i found so many different causes of clunking and squeking.

P.S. How do i quote everybody?

That's actually normal, and you want some play (~1/4") in the pedal to keep it from riding on the clutch and burning out your TOB.

You still may have lost one of those clips. If it is the brakes, at low speed you'll get a clunk every time you tap or release the brake pedal (as the caliper bangs around in the bracket).

See the button next to "Quote" that just has a "-" in it? That's multi-quote. Just hit that on all the posts you want to quote but the last one, and hit the normal quote on that.

I would bet on a motor mount based on the noise you are describing. With the Park brake set tight, let out on the clutch(In Gear) while somone else observes your engine to see if there is excessive engine movement under load. They meight even hear the clunk....just a thought.....Make sure there is nothing in front of the vehicle...to include your second set of eyes....just in case....Good luck
